They are basically unrecyclable because it takes so much effort to take them to bits to recycle the separate materials. Where as something as simple as a de razor or even a SE razor, will last year's and the blades being metal are easily to recycle. I still have my great uncle's de razor and he died sometime in the mid 80s. Unfortunately my grandfather's Gillette which was slightly damaged seems to have been misplaced and that was dated from the 1920s.
The sustainable choice which will last a lifetime, is environmentally friendly. Is not plastic lol. Have you considered changing.

JLouM it's not cheap, uses 3 single edge blades or snapped DE blades. I'm in a Facebook group that get a % off. So far a better deal you need to join the group. There as also a grip you can add. As it can get slippery in the shower and you don't wanna drop it, it was £79 for the razor and a % deducted for FB group discount. The vendor was agentshave and razors called "leaf shave razor". They do paypal and you can get pay in three.

JLouM see pictures sleeve and razor prices without code. Hopefully I will not be told off. I need to get my other daughter one and so will call or SMS them Monday to see if I can share the code or perhaps I could mention to FB groups name, but am reluctant to do that and get in trouble with admin. 
JLouM yes sadly a good idea seems to suppressed itself really out of the market and could have a much larger share and impact in environmental waste. It will obviously if you look after the device save you money in a few years. As you can pickup one hundred SE blades on Amazon for less than £5
JLouM I have posted a link for the razor blade cub which has finally been approved, where you can buy several different types of razor very cheaply to try them out as they are all slightly different because they are made in different factories and made from different materials and what your neighbour may like you may hate. The price of this razor with the nectar card I believe is 16 pounds instead of 24 and with 10 blades it looks like a good choice to introduce a yl to DE shaving, please let me know if you pick one up and how it goes.
Do not apply any pressure to the razor let the weight of the razor do the work for you and keep the razor at approximately a 30 degree angle to your skin and do not go side to side. Side to side is a very BAD idea! Because it will look like Michael Myers has had a go at you 
Switched to a safety razor a few years ago, brilliant choice. And much cheaper too. The razor with a pack of 100 blades was around £15.
lornaae I was brought up after the switch to cartridges and after clearing my grandparents, I brought home my great uncles razor and grandfathers, the grandfathers has gone missing, I still have uncles razor and have a few of my own, as yes much cheaper, a better shave, with less irritation and the blades never clog up as you can strip it down. What blades do you prefer and have you tried others? As not all blades are equal lol
My son has gone back to the old fashioned razor so he just buys the blades. Saves a fortune and says the shave is the best. I think that is what I will do too
