The Price of the 99 Ice Cream

Other

It’s been a while since I’ve had one of these, and though I know it’s no longer 99p (and hasn’t been so for decades!), I was amazed to see the ice cream truck selling a 99 for £2.70, and a flake (which is a third of a bar) is 30p

So it’ll be £3 to enjoy my childhood treat! Thankfully, it’s too cold for ice cream, so I easily walked away...

I’m in London, although I wasn’t in the central part at the time - it was outside Ravenscourt Station, in Hammersmith. I’m sure it costs more the closer into town I go! Lol

I never get ice cream from truck, just not appealing to me.

Also McDonalds sells very nice vanilla ice cream and it is 99p

I’ve not had ice cream for McDonald’s in years, but it’s definitely much better value. They used to do the small cones for 20p - I’m sure it’s more than that now, but it’ll still be reasonable

I could have sworn I ate McDonald's ice cream in Cyprus for €0.70 (£0.63) so seeing it as 99p is kinda expensive. lol

Lots of people are making lots of money at the expense of others, especially young families. Despite all the moans about being broke people continue to pay these inflated prices. Just refuse. Poorer families cannot afford a day out with the family, cinema, theme parks, attractions etc are way beyond the price many can pay, and even adding an ice cream or drink makes it worse. It would be nice if once or twice a year they opened their doors half price or less for those in need.

I agree. I just found it funny seeing it on a miserably, wet day like yesterday, although I’m sure he still managed to get customers. If I fancied an ice cream, I would have just walked up the road to get one from the supermarket for £1 - I might have had to eat the entire multipack, but some sacrifices are worth making! Lol

hspexy ha ha you can't beat Iceland for multipacks of icecreams. But I do find it strange that people who can Ill afford the money will spend £10 plus on 4 ice creams instead of a multi pack. Same goes for cans of drink.

In London, it's ridiculously overpriced. Even the ice cream van that comes round our residential parts is charging at least £2 for one of them! Nice to have but definitely a treat !

Tbh I used to think London was charging too much, but then I went to the coast...ice cream by the seaside is the most expensive!

You are better off buying a tub of ice cream from your local supermarket along with some ice cream cones and Flake chocolates. Make your own ice creams. 🍦

Yes the prices do keep going up, and it’s also the councils‘ fault as I know for a fact they keep hiking up the prices for licenses, especially in my area

I always complain about this everytime i buy one 😂 they still call it a 99 flake in most places - may as well call it a 270 flake 🙄 it was 99p when I was young and I’m only 24 now... seems a very steep jump in my opinion! Went to a touristy beach a few weeks back and I think it cost us £6 for two 99 flakes, then as I walked away, the whole ice cream fell off my cone 😒 I was raging, they hadn’t filled the ice cream to the bottom of the cone, it was just balancing on top, so my partner went back and bought another one, they just looked at us and shrugged and didn’t care about taking another £3 off us, even though it was their fault 😠

That’s terrible! I swear when we used to get ice cream, the vendors always cared that we enjoyed it (I can’t be sure, but as a kid, I remember enjoying my 99s) But I guess it’s all about the money these days...

Yes it’s soo pricy. You definitely need notes to pay for ice cream, as change just isn’t enough. I saw a family buy drinks and ice cream at the park part with £20...with no change

My sister was over the other day and came running in the house saying she needed more cash as she was buying my kids and herself an ice cream from our local ice cream chap. When she came back in the house with the ice creams and the extra cash she took she freaked out at the cheap prices. Her expectations as a Londoner in my area of Yorkshire blew her mind. It cost her around £2.80 for the three of them. They had two small and one large cones, no flake though.

Lol I bet at those prices, she’s more than happy to visit you more frequently - and she’ll bring her own flakes next time 😜

so does coffee at costa cost the same as a jar of coffee from iceland and some milk and sugar? or does a pack of burgers and buns from tesco cost the same as a whopper from burger king? what a stupid statement to compare the prices at a discount supermarket to a taleaway. last time i went to the chippy my god he charged me 3.50 for a bag of chips, i coulda got a potato for 23p and made em myself.

Like anything there are costs. do you think an ice cream van costs nothing, a new one costs over £100k + vat. there is a reason that their is only a 10th of the vans as their was and this post here is the reason why. i get people coming up to my van and say "i thought a 99 was 99p" yeah it was that when they came last to a van 20 years ago. in real terms the price of a cone has dropped. i charge 1.50 a single and im about average. 20 years ago it was £! with flake so in 20 year its not even doubled in price. but fuel has, licences have, wages have, repairs have. everything. if they are making so much why dont you try it. most that start give up when they find its not rip off britain and they cant make enough.

mcdonalds sells a non dairy product. its a cheap alternative to full fresh dairy that most ice cream vans sell. its like comparing cheap sausages from the supermarket to good ones from the butcher. thats how they can sell it cheaper. i cant even buy the stuff at the prices iceland charge niever can any restaurant or takeaway and then on top you will have all your other costs. obviously what we have in this thread is people with absolutely no idea of the costs to run a buisness. if i sold at a pound a cone i would need to sell 200 a day before i started making wages because 1. you dont work every day its a long winter, 2. in 40 quid a day just in diesel thats 40 cones just to cover that. 3 the cost of the ice cream and van maintenance and insurances and repairs and everything else that needs paid before you earn. just like you can get a 12 pack of beers from tesco for the price of 2 at your local pub but you still go to the pub because its social, its a treat, and the priduct is better.
