Have You Had to Quit Work because of Childcare Costs?
Ask a Question
Have you had to quit work or leave your studies to avoid childcare costs?
A recent survey found 23% of parent in their UK had to make the choice because the cost of childcare meant it wasn't worth it.
Personally no, it was hard 20 years ago when my son was small but I think at the minute it's maybe worse. However I do know a colleague who came back from maternity & ended up taking a 5 year career break because her (part time) wage all went on childcare fees so she was working for nothing. She came back when her youngest went to school.
12 years ago I gave up the job I had cos Id have been working to pay for childcare with virtually nothing left. I took a year off. Went and volunteered after a year then got paid work out it
Yes I quit when my second child came along. I worked it out, and I would have been working for nothing, so had a break for about 6 years. Best decision ever. Loved every minute of bringing up my little ones .
I've colleagues that are working hard but can't afford to feed themselves at the end of the month because they can't afford rent and childcare costs. This is on top of help in terms of benefits. If they gave up work they would have rent and nursery fees paid for. The system is broken. It's not OK.
For me no I was working till I was 8 months pregnant haven't gone back to work as yet my little one doesn't start school for another 2 years we live on my other half wages
I had to stop working due to my sons medical condition but my wages would have all gone on childcare if he hadn't been ill and needed looked after 24/7. When I was younger my mum's wage used to go on childcare, especially during the summer holidays.
My daughter is a teacher and works full-time 3 days a week she's working for £1.00 !!!! After paying for child care
