Share Your Favorite Films and Series: Reviews Without Spoilers

I have been the first to complain about the amount of Netflix, Amazon, film topics on here. Requests for suggestions etc. But to be honest a list of titles tells nothing about the film/series or why you liked it. So, how about choosing something you have loved watching during lockdown (or an all time favourite), and giving us a proper review without spoilers so we can tell if we would fancy watching it.
Try not to repeat another's favourite but 'like it' if you have 'liked it' too lol.
Folk seem to watch more than read so maybe this will go down better than the book club.
I have been reading the reviews but haven't actually had time to watch any of them, ironic I know! I would like to recommend Line of Duty. It is available on Netflix and the latest series was on Iplayer, not sure of it still is. It follows A12, the anti corruption department of the police. They look into corruption in the police force and are trying to find the notorious H, who is in control of a corrupt operation within the police! There are lots of twists and turns, things I didn't see coming and is intriguing. It kept me hooked till the end. The characters are brilliant, it is well written and the actors are fantastic. There is ofcourse some violence and swearing but it is definitely worth a watch.
We watched a show called ares on Netflix avoid avoid avoid! Load of rubbish! Queen of the south and narcos were good also white lines
Thanks Leigh, it is also good to be warned about series that are not so good although I bet some would think it is great, we are such a diverse species!
I absolutely adore Outlander but my two sons just can't get on with it. My granddaughter was the same until she got to episode 4 and then she became it's biggest fan lol. She was at uni at the time and they would spend loads of time talking about it.
I haven't done a review on it as there is a whole thread devoted to Outlander, I will add the link in a mo.

Lynibis I love outlander I binge watched it after it had aired on tv such a good story line and a few eek bits! Lol
LeighReidAtanas have you read the books? I have read all 8 and eagerly awaiting no.9.
I have a little reading corner with a recliner chair. My granddaughter bought me a tartan throw and a cushion with Jamie and Claire on it, it's now my Outlander corner lol.
Thanks Nino but it is a review thread, are you able to give a bit more info even if it is the genre and who is in it. Whether it is family, sci fi, drama, spy etc.
As there has been a bit more action on here I am going to review one of my all time favourites.....Vikings.
Have watched this 3 times but I am very aware that my taste in viewing is not everyone's. The title speaks for itself so I am not going to go into the story as there is so much going on and it spans 3 generations. Suffice to say it starts with the initial Viking raid on Lindisfarne by the ambitious Ragnar Lothbrok and his eventual rise to fame and high status. Basically a good man but as bloodthirsty and vengeful as men of all races in that era. The story follows him and his 5 sons and his ex wife who is also a warrior. The writer of the series has kept as much as possible to real history and it makes for a viewing rollercoaster of a ride. Enjoy.
If you like this you will also like The Last Kingdom, if I had to rate these series Vikings would be 9.8 and Last Kingdom 9.5
I have this picture framed hanging on my upstairs hall wall!
Have resurrected this again because someone yesterday again asked for viewing recommendations. Anyway I am now finally watching Our Girl on BBC iPlayer and to my surprise quite enjoying it. Worth a watch if you haven't seen it.
Not heard of Last Dance, what genre is it and anyone well known? I like historical stuff mainly but don't mind a good spy or thriller drama.
I finished watching Our Girl and was very impressed with Michelle Keegan, not so much with Lacey Turner. In view of the current furore I couldn't help laughing when a black guy said to a white guy that he was whiter than a rice pudding despite being in Afghan for several months!
Now watching Musketeers again, a bit more light hearted with 4 lovely guys and adventures galore......oooops is that a sexist remark objectifying men lol?
Spot the hunk in both!
Ann1984 I can remember trying to watch that several years ago but couldn't get past the first episode. I find it difficult to watch puzzling opening episodes where you have to wait forever to understand what is going on lol. I like a straightforward story that unfolds. But then it wouldn't do for us all to like the same things.
I loved Braveheart when it came out but could not ever watch again as I found the gruesome bits too hard to watch.
"Sons of Anarchy" and then the sequel - Mayans M.C.
For me, SoA is far superior in every level, but some of the characters from Mayans M.C. remind me of my people.
Vikings is up there in my top 5 all time favourites. I am gutted that the second half of the current series will be the last. However, I have heard there will be an offshoot of the series and I really hope it is true.
My review of this show is on previous page.
Ann1984 No, I didn't. If I am right is it sci fi, that is a genre I cannot watch, not even Star Wars lol. But yes, when you said you OH watched History, I guessed we had similar tastes. I loved the Plantagenets (documentary) with Dan Jones narrating. He also did an interesting one about the Treasure of the Knights Templar. Sam Willis has also done a lot of good historical ones, Swords, Muskets and Canon and a good one about Pirates.
PS Did you see my topic about Frustration With Chat. Someone copied one of my comments!!!
We’ve nearly finished the series of Rake on Netflix - it’s an Australian comedy about a slightly crazy barrister and all his antics.. very easy watching and lots of funny bits, but quite adult themed with drug use and sex scenes despite being advertised as “teen”! Theres 5 series worth
I've only just started watching Marco Polo on Netflix - I have overdosed on comedy for the last couple of months and now prepared to watch something a little meatier. This is 6 years old but I thought it would be the story we all know so ignored it. Some amazing scenery and sets with a completely different side to the explorer's story. Well worth a watch.
Synopsis - In a world replete with greed, betrayal, sexual intrigue and rivalry, "Marco Polo" is based on the famed explorer's adventures in Kublai Khan's court in 13th century Mongolia.
angemski another we have both enjoyed! I watched it some time ago and have been debating recently whether to watch again as I am so fussy and can't find anything new. I have watched 1st series of Medici this week and find I do get quite a lot from a second watch so may give Borgias a go for the third time soon. Was annoyed to find Borgias on Amazon but having to pay through a site called Acorn. I do not understand why there are so many you have to pay for on there but luckily I have the boxset.
'Breaking Bad' would be my choice to recommend if you haven't seen it. If you have already seen it then the prequel 'Better Call Saul' is a must too, that has just finished season 4 and is must see for Breaking Bad fans.
I watched BB when it first came out and before all the modern tech I now have, so my viewing was a bit intermittent. It was so different from anything else I had seen. I never saw it through to end but 18 year old grandson loved it. I tried Saul but sorry to say only made it to second episode!
As older topics are being deleted, I am unashamedly bumping this up in view of the constant topics regarding recommendations for things to watch.
I've just found out that the first episode of 'Bridgerton' will be shown on Netflix on Christmas Day. I hope it's as good as the books, either way it'll be something to enjoy on the day or record and store.
Going to show my ignorance here....I have never heard of it. Who wrote it sunny?
I have been watching The Spanish Princess on Amazon but can't binge as episodes are aired weekly at present. In case you don't know it is about Henry VIII and Katherine of Aragon in the early years.
Lynibis I've also been watching the Spanish Princess. The family series was written by Julia Quinn and the narrator is a Lady Whistledown. (I think Julie Andrews will play this part) I read them when I just couldn't settle on something meaty and I really enjoyed the books. Set early 1800s
I was watching the Spanish Princess, but the fact that the cast is nearly all English kind of ruins the whole Spanish aspect. It's not as if they couldn't hurt actual Spanish actors and actresses.
HBO has started making Spanish series and they're awesome (30 Coins, Patria). sunny101
Lynibis I thoroughly enjoyed watching it but I also had preconceived ideas about the characters. Daphne and Simon were absolutely spot on, Penelope Featherington was too panicked and came across as a little desperate, even when there were no witnesses - nothing like the book character who was very calm. (her alter ego Whistledown held the ton in her palm and enjoyed that fact)
Love Ben Miller but his Lord Fetherington was almost comedic.
Lady Danbury disappointed too - I'd expected her to be the book version, very dry witted, cutting to the unkind and deliberately fearsome! She was known to feign oblivious carelessness and spike an unfortunate's foot with her cane as she walked away from them. The tv version was too controlled to be believed.
That said, the scenery and costumes were beautiful and I will most definitely be watching - there are some really good stories ahead.
Lynibis I admit that I have only just returned to Outlander - the books leading up to this series spoilt it, for me, for a long while so I kept the tv series in my 'dormant library' for a time when I couldn't fully remember the book. (we both agreed D Gabaldon put a lot of padding in the last book)
I have read so many books in the last couple of months I sometimes go to bed pick up my kindle and until I open it can't actually remember what I am reading!
I recently read the call of the raven, by Wilbur Smith but although I enjoyed it, not quite as much as others I have read.
Edit: Just realised this should be on the book review thread!
If you like American crime dramas, then I recommend Chicago PD, FBI and FBI: Most Wanted. Chicago has about 5 or 6 seasons, FBI has 2 and Most Wanted has 1. Chicago Fire and Chicago Med are also amazing. Amsterdam is another good medical drama.
I've only recently started watching 'How to get away with murder'. I wasn't sure about it in the first couple of episodes and only started watching it as 'fill-in' in leaner times.
No spoilers but it's compelling and just when you think you know what's going on it shocks you. Worth a watch.
I have now tv and love a good series. Chicago fire and Chicago PD were really good. I’m into crime dramas etc
I found benidorm on Netflix is a nice thing to watch, you get hooked and watch it all day. Give it a go if you havent already
Comedy is my least favourite genre but I have watched the odd Benidorm and can see why people like it. I certainly wouldn't knock it. You can see from my entries on here what my favourite genre is.
