Is Two Years of Weight Loss Drugs Enough to Change Lifestyle Habits?
Other
Available privately but can be prescribed for maximum of 2 years due to cost. Man interviewed (who has got it privately) said he has lost lots of weight and is no longer asthmatic, would be happy to take for life as after two years folk would pile the weight back on.
Surely that would just prove that you have not moderated your lifestyle?
Surely people should also take responsibility for their health. If being ill and having weight related diseases is not enough to change your ways why should the nhs supply drugs for whole of life? Two years is enough to help you on your way isn't it?
Well i guess from the NHS’s point of view it’s probably cheaper to give these drugs than have to have the cost all of the health problems that come with being overweight.
I agree though weight can be lost in a more natural way and the nhs has a lot of things to promote healthy lifestyles but it doesn’t seem to be working.
jms19 I totally agree with you. It would be cheaper for nhs to deal with obesity with drugs than the results of the associated diseases. It just makes me angry that people refuse to take responsibility for their own health. I bet if they had to pay for treatment they wouldn't be so quick to carry on with their unhealthy habits.
I think it is great to help people if they are stuck, but it should be along side therapy for many, otherwise nothing will change and it could be more dangerous for them after the 2 years.
I don't think it is an easy fix though, I don't know much about it, but it is likely a hunger suppressant or something that you poop out the fat, these are the two I know of. Sadly it doesn't stop some people from still overeating or eating the wrong things, so I'd imagine it isn't for everyone.
I just want to say from the asthmatic response, he would likely mean he is no longer as affected by asthma. Anyone who was excited by that comment, sadly you can't cure it from weight loss, as there is no cure sadly.
I think we all want to fast track the hard stuff but I think you can't beat a sensible lifestyle.
Not everyone is over weight for lack of lifestyle..my friend has been in hospital and the medication has meant she has put lots of weight on..people she knows have been so rude to her.thinking it's what she is eating..doesn't bother to explain. Maybe people shouldn't be too quick in judging
Kitty10 I really do appreciate that not everyone is obese due to their lifestyle, but many are. I have never heard anyone be openly rude but I guess some do get subjected to it. I look around and see so many people overweight, more than slim people and it is such a shame. I don't believe we should be glorifying fat and pretending big is beautiful. I felt uncomfortable and unattractive when I was fat but I managed to lose 3 stone and am now trying hard not to put it back on.
Well I know I have been overweight for a while now. Unfortunately it’s not easy to lose. I do exercise a bit but I know I need to have more willpower and discipline ultimately. I am trying to lose it but some could be due to medication that I need. I don’t like the idea of the injections though. I’d rather do it myself.
If it helps to lose weight l would love to try it as l need that initial boost/push.. if it worked l would combine healthy eating with walking and gardening (my favourite forms of exercise) to keep the weight off as l would NEVER want to feel as lethargic and unfit as l do now.
