Sainsburys to Scrap Plastic Bags in Stores for Fruit and Veg from Monday

Just read Sainsbury’s are to scrap plastic bags in stores for fruit and veg From 30th September. Instead, you’ll be encouraged to bring your own, or pay a 30p charge for a reusable carrier.
This will apply in all convenience stores and about 500 supermarkets with more to follow
Not sure this is a good idea myself, think they should have concentrated on removing the plastic from Pre Packed produce first. I know you can take your own bags but who wants loose Grapes ,tomatoes or sprouts rolling around your bag amongst other items .I also find after a few use a carrier gets quite grotty anyway . Surely they could have provided paper or recyclable bags I don't think I'll be buying the loose produce from Sainsburys from next week
I am glad they they are doing something but, like you, not at all happy for fruit and veg to roll around in a used carrier bag! I agree that they could have switched over to the paper bags that you get for mushrooms or bread. Sounds like they're making savings all round.
I totally agree with all of this. No reason why they couldn't have switched to thin paper bags. It sounds like a money saving and marketing move more than saving the planet from single use plastic.
I was surprised to notice that Boots the chemists have now changed from paper bags to sealed plastic bags, when supplying prescription items, perhaps it's because there is a clear section on the bags so we can check the contents before opening - but it still surprised me.
That's crazy - surely some people wouldn't want anyone else seeing the medications they collect? (great temptation to the opportunist to relieve the stronger meds from unsuspecting customers) and why would they go backwards? I give up! ( I had to edit as the 'bots didn't like my word 
)
angemski They will still if asked supply a PLASTIC carry bag to put the smaller bags in - those carry bags used (until a few months ago) to be paper. Medicines are one of the exceptions to the compulsory plastic bag charge,
As above I am in full agreement with reducing plastic but replace it with paper bags, even the option to purchase them with fruit and veg. What will be happening with home deliveries?
I think it's a great idea that they are scrapping plastic bags because as the moment they are just still too convenient for people to pick up. We all should be doing more for the environment.
I don't think that they are doing this to help the environment but to get more money from people. They should remove the plastic from fruit and veg. Now that will be a real change!

... They just want you to charge money while pretending it's about the environment. Now everyone has jumped into the "climate change" mentality and either try to profit or scaremonger.
The amount of plastic on fruit and veg is ridiculous, especially the fruit that has its own protective layer. If i buy bananas i don't use a bag
Just been local Sainsbury's and they have taken the plastic bags away and they are trying to sell you a 30p bag in place of them.
Haven't changed anything else thou still Cabbages & Cauli in plastic bags, Carrots Parsnips Apples etc all pre packed in plastic bags and on the Deli counter still put 4 pieces of white plastic wrapping around my Ham and them in a Plastic bag.
Shocking! It seems as though our cynicism wasn't misplaced after all. They are out to save money - not the planet.
