Selling Old Gadgets - Where Do You Tend to Get the Best Deals?
Ask a Question
So I'm a little stuck, got an s8 galaxy which doesn't work and not sure whether to go through an online company who buys phones or to go via something like ebay. What's worked best for you guys?
I tend to check around with CEX, Mazuma Mobile and check with the phone companies/network themselves, especially if you are after a new phone, you can often get more for a trade rather than a sell.
Then I often price it for something in between what they sell for and what I'd get for it and hope someone will give me the same as the companies or a little bit more. I wouldn't use eBay though, I sold something for £5 the other day and only got £4 of it without postage. It is super steep what they take from you. Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree are probably the best options. I wouldn't sell electrical items on Vinted or high value, Shpock people can click buy and then not pay, so it takes it off for sale, I recently had similar on eBay too.
But beware of all of the scams going around. Make sure you accept cash only, do not click any links they send you, especially if it says 'if your item the same as these'. Too many people will offer a 'bank transfer' and say their relative will collect for them. I always have a mass of scammers contact me through most sale platforms, it can be a grueling task, these people are often not even in the country and will use international accounts. If you don't want the hassle take it to a trade in store and see if they will buy it, just to save yourself some time, energy and brain power.
Personal experience, avoid webuyanyphone at all costs.
I got a valuation of £501 for my iPhone when I upgraded last year.
It was pristine, as I use a screen protector and case at all times, there was not a mark on it.
Once they received the phone I got an email stating they had downgraded the condition from good to faulty, and their new valuation was £108.
When I enquired what the issue was they stated the screen was badly marked and scratched.
Luckily, I had taken photographs prior to selling it, so I knew this was not the case.
I therefore decided there was no way I was accepting the lower price, and requested my phone be returned.
Fast forward 5 days and £108 from webuyanyphone appeared in my bank account.
Rather than return the phone, they'd decided I had accepted the lower offer.
What follows were a number of angry exchanges which got me precisely nowhere, so reluctantly I too them to the small claims court.
Unsurprisingly, this concentrated their minds somewhat and they started taking me seriously.
We eventually agreed on a compromise price of £400 if I halted the small claims case.
Although this was £100 less than originally agreed, I decided it was worth it to end the hassle.
blacklabrador Wow what a vile company I guess for these sort of transactions there is less protection for consumers. I often overhear what people are offered in CEX and its very low. I use completed sales box on ebay to see what similar items to mine have gone for and set my item as a buy it now somewhere in the middle ideally on a discounted ebay fee weekend. However for some stuff I just use auction but try to end the auction on a weekend when there is more people looking. I think Thursday may be the best day to list on a 10 day auction so it ends on Sunday. Unfortunately ebay doesn't have discounts on a Thursday typically.
BonzoBanana I think eBay is the way I'll go in future.
I tried webuyanyphone because they purport to be a simple transaction - simple drop the phone in an envelope, send it free post and wait for the cash.
Lesson learnt for me for the future.
blacklabrador unfortunately it’s always the little guy that ends up getting ripped off. Certain companies are notorious for doing this sort of thing n
Wow sounds like an awful experience!! I will absolutely keep that in mind, I just want something hassle free and make a few quid in the process, not fussed about getting a lot of money for my old 2017 model
Just sell it on ebay with a final value fee promotion. Or Facebook marketplace, or gumtree. I will never understand why people sell their phones to high street traders for way less than they are worth. Is it really that much more hassle to list it online and either box it up to send or hand it to somebody for cash than it is to go into town and fill out a form to sell it to some conjob pawn shop?
I was offered £115 for my last xaiomi phone at cex. Sold it on ebay for £200. Final value fees were about £3 on promotion, and postage was about £5. So I made about £77 on top of what I would have got trading it.
Only time it's worth trading in is when Samsung, Curry's or whoever have a promotion going where they offer £100 credit on any old phone/tablet. I did this with Samsung last time, traded in a very old, barely functional galaxy S3 for £100 off an S21.
Never pawn anything if you can help it.
