Short Dates on Food.
Deals
I get quite a few bargains from approved foods And post a few deals on here. Some of the dates are fine but some are short and some stuff is out of date. I’ve recieved a few comments on a couple of shared deals saying it must be a joke or similar comments. Surely the dated items must be ok to sell or else sites like approved foods wouldn’t be allowed to sell them ! Eating dated stuff has never done me and mine any harm !!!!
Best before dates are NOT indications of when food becomes unsafe to eat. It simply means that the taste, appearance or nutritional value may deteriorate a bit. That's all. But otherwise it is still very much safe to eat.
It's a sad fact that many perfectly to eat food goes to waste simply because they have reached their best before dates or beyond.
Keep posting the deals. Approved Foods is a great website.
RegularComper90 i always freeze bread that I can't use up and toast straight from freezer when needed. Also use it up in a good old bread pudding, yum!
Lynibis I love bread pudding. It's one of my favourites.
Got to have plenty of fruit in it though.
RegularComper90 Very well pointed. There is a big difference between Best Before and USE BY. Even so, it is always necessary to be careful when it comes to meat, fish or dairy products, often they were unfit for consumption even before the use by date because of the poor conservation of the product.
I am happy to finish food that is past it's best, but what I do object to is ordering online, as I did for an evening delivery on 16th January, only to find my bag of potatoes were best before 17th. As I live alone I had expected them to be good for at least a couple of days' meals and would not have minded them being a bit past it toward end of week.
I did not waste them though. I cooked, mashed and froze some, peeled and par boiled some others and froze for roasties and used the rest during next two days.
nicolajaynehend i often make shepherds (cottage) pie in individual containers and then only need to thaw and serve with veg and gravy. I freeze mash in individual dishes too and great to thaw and pop in oven along with a casserole or sausages etc.
My boss was round one day when my shopping was delivered and was surprised to see me put his favourite brand of butter in the freezer (I had bought several while on offer). I didn't know you could freeze butter, he said, now he does it too!
Hi Lynibis I only know the other that you could freeze butter . I now freeze my butter. I love making cottage pie individual. But I all was had MASH left over. And did not know what to do. With it. But now thanks to you I do. And thank you so much for the tip.
We use Olio and always collect from the pret volunteers. The food is still in date and tastes good but would have been otherwise thrown out. We have even collected them on the wednesday/thursday and put the sandwiches in the fridge and not eaten them until the monday and they were still fresh.
I’d never heard of olio so just googled them and have a quick read. It looks really good. Ill have a proper read through when my grandson is in bed. Thanks very much
