Slow Cooker 'Roast' (update)
Other
I have recently been cooking pork fillet and beef in my slow cooker. The former with tiny bit of water and chopped apples (could probably use a dash of cider). And the beef either with a dash of water and some onion around it, or a beef bourginon packet mix. After several hours the meat just falls apart and is delicious. Doing beef today for family roast dinner, yeh i know it's Saturday but they can't make it tomorrow!
Hi lynibis I've not got a slow cooker. But i am thinking of getting one. Your pork fillet with Apple's and a dash of cider sounds very tasty. After reading what you cook in yours I am going to get one will have a look around. So one told me you can cook a whole chicken in a slow cooker. Could you cook a small joint of lamb in a slow cooker. I am just not sure what can be cooked in a slow cooker. I think that's why I've not got one. But i am going to get one.
Hi Nicola, you can get one for quite a reasonable price, a good one for under £20. If you go over to deals and search, loads will come up. Most i have bought over the years have come with a little paper recipe booklet and there are loads of slow cooker cook books. You will be amazed what you can do in them. I do stews and pop dumplings in for last hour.
I often work until 6 or 7pm so do not feel like cooking when I get in, but I mostly don't start work until 10am or later so have time in the morning to get something started. Great for Bolognese sauce.
I have one. I'm about to enjoy pulled pork tonight, and may well throw my lamb shanks in it tomorrow.
They are great.
They really do make the meat very tender and yes, you can have pulled lamb, beef or pork, and chicken almost melts in stews/casseroles.
Ive got slow cooker but usually stick to curry or stew. Ill give the roast beef a go as im hopeless at roasting beef. Thanks for the tip.
I was going to start a slow cooker topic but remembered this one from 2 years ago!
nicolajaynehend the recipes above will inspire you if you did get a slow cooker. And chelseaturpin I recall you were moving and wanting to get one so you may also be interested.
Lynibis thank you so much for doing this . Yes I did get a slow cooker. And what a big help it has been. All ways needing new recipes . Once again thank you for your help.
Thanks for this...I have 3 slow cookers and swear by them .... always keen for new recipes tho!
It is so tender and absolutely ideal for pulled meat. I do a lean beef joint in one when my sons come to dinner, they love it. Whole chicken too.
I've thought about getting a slow cooker but not sure. can you do taste tests. how much can you put in
Not sure what you mean about taste tests, but you can get different sizes depending how much you want to put in or size of family.
I have a trio of small ones which can be used individually. Ideal for doing three different dishes each suitable for 1 or 2 people. The large one is family size when I have guests or more batch cooking. If you look at the link above you will see just how much you can make in a slow cooker, ideal to come home to a cooked meal and tastes no different to oven cooked.
Although I haven't done it myself you can also cook desserts in it.
Imnotcheap Oh I see, yes I often lift the lid to give a stir or taste. The instructions often say not to take lid off but 10 seconds can't do any harm, just don't do too often or too long. But even if you did, just cook a little longer.
Lynibis I admit that my slow cooker is one of the few gadgets I 'had to have' that sits in the back of a cupboard. You made me feel guilty so I looked at the recipes and there are some that could well let the old crock see daylight again. It's for this reason that I haven't given in and bought an air-fryer. (I tell myself I just can't spare that much space in my relegation cupboard. )
Ha ha, I know the feeling. I made a throw away comment about making my own pasta so my son bought me a pasta maker for my birthday yesterday. Didn't realise how complicated and heavy they are! Now have to find a home for it.
