Starting a "What Do You Think about ."? Chat and Then No Personal Comment
Ask a Question
What does anyone else think about 'chats' that get posted asking a question eg "what do you think about β¦." but the OP doesn't say what they think or come back with further comment?
It really annoys me, if the OP wants the views of others why not give theirs first it's more likely to get a conversation.
It annoys me too! If you are going to ask a question then it is only polite to respond to people when they answer your question. Plus it is good to know what the OP thi is about the topic as it can help others when responding.
The chat section here has become over-run with poor posts in my humble opinion. I think there needs to be a quality check and I can fully understand why some chats are indeed deleted.
I comment and add to one chat thread that I started, and that really is it. Some of the topics are so inconsequential it beggars believe. I am hoping the team comes to some sensible conclusions about this part of the website as I question whether it harms the brand.
Xx
Ceebers I agree, even after posting this chat there were some new ones with a 'what do you think' line but no contribution from OP. Can they be policed for content from within? Another gripe are the ones that ask for help/advice and then don't respond to the suggestions aaagggghhhh.
lilyflower It is an ongoing issue. Not sure what the answer is. Perhaps if the points were taken away from the chat function, then this may dissuade people from posting daft topics. I would be all for that. I am not bothered about collecting points for chatting on my ongoing Freebie and Competition thread. I just like hearing from everyone, the wins and the banter. We have built up a great, community over the years. Xx
Ceebers the points for chatting are an added bonus. I also like to hear about everyone's wins, I like to see the advice people give and hear what people think. When I post a topic it is to ask for advice or to share my own opinion on something and find out what others think, so it wouldn't bother me if they took away the points for posting topics. Xx
MrsCraig Nor me, I like to interact and 'try' to be helpful to others, sometimes this is how a problem is solved.
Lynibis I have stated this before and will continue to do so, but I believe that the overall chat isn't going to be getting any better until points are removed for contributing to it. The chat feature isn't a requirement for the website like deals and competitions are. So I don't really see the point in being rewarded with points.
Don't get me wrong, there are still some interesting, meaty and original topics every now and then if you go digging for them.
RegularComper90 I think the points for starting a chat should be removed, might then stop silly questions with no input from poster. We could all post silly questions daily - what kind of jam do you like? what colour washing up liquid do you use? Does your dog sleep on the floor or bed? Answers Don't eat it. Normally green. Don't have a dog.
lilyflower I have the most important question of the century to ask you. This has never been asked in a chat topic before. Here it goes...
Dogs vs cats?
RegularComper90 again, I agree. This has been suggested so many times and common sense does not seem to prevail. It is such a simple thing to do and would improve chat no end. I really don't understand why they won't implement this. Maybe fear that people will no longer post a topic? Of course they will and the quality will improve.
Lynibis Those who genuinely want to chat would do so anyway regardless on whether or not they will get points in return.
RegularComper90 Lynibis I regularly go well over 5 a day because I enjoy the interchange. Wouldn't it be better to have fewer chats about interesting stuff and those asking for help/advice/suggestions than mundane "do you like?" "what colour are your slippers?" "do you even wear slippers?"
lilyflower RegularComper90 Lynibis I regularly go over the 5 comments too, I enjoy talking to others. I've already said it wouldnt bother me if the points were removed but I don't think that there are any plans for that to happen. I just scroll past those types of chats but if anyone cares my slippers are black with pink and white spots and my sons are navy rockets
RegularComper90 I've decided cats. Lynibis MrsCraig Have any of you noticed how many new chats are practically repeats of some that have gone before, why can't people scroll through previous chats and see if the topic is there - oops, easy points.
lilyflower yes I have noticed that too. If you type a topic into the search section it shows you if the topic exists. If I am posting a topic then I tend to check there first.
lilyflower because as you say easy points and have lost nothing if it stays put and isn't reported. The netflix/Amazon are the worst and we have also had more than one asking about schools going back. There are loads of new members and I think everyone thinks they are the first to think of that topic lol!
I keep getting my chats deleted. I have no idea why, they're not duplicate or against any rules, but hey ho
RuthSwain I'm sorry if you didn't understand me correctly. I asked you which post of yours was removed, so I can check and tell you why.
I searched the last 250 posts on LD and found none of your posts, then I asked you for more details so I could check.
I never accused you of anything, I'm just a mentor trying to help users by clarifying doubts.
Cheers
TheChimp That's because she's been busy and it's now lunch time. I gave my view at the beginning! Anyway you are a fine one to talk as no-one got a response to your 'what should I do with glass bottles'! and you've contributed nothing to the original question.
lilyflower I keep forgetting about getting awarded points
How much did I get for that last comment? 5?
If I keep on going like that, I should get my 1st voucher by 2025
This has been discussed many times over the last couple of years. It's a point gathering strategy and members get away with it because they can. The best way to deal with it is not to respond on a thread when you just know that the poster won't return. The most blatant topic shared was something like 'I'll just leave it here for you all to discuss'.
This comment is purely to gain points but I have forgotten how many words are needed for it to qualify so I'll let the auto fill thing on my phone take over as soon as possible but not before the end of the week so I'll have to wait until the end of the country and reduce travel costs for the rest of us and all of the whoopsies on Friday for a few days more than a week ago so we can see if we can get the message across from amazon tomorrow evening or Sunday morning if that's OK.
Gosh that's a long sentence not a , or . in sight. Let us know where you end up. I'm only replying because TheChimp gets worried if I'm quiet.
lilyflower The auto fill didn't offer any punctuation as I just tapped the words. That must be how a lot of people write online, based on what I've seen!
ukheather Agree, even after posting this there were some vague chats with questions and no opinion given, why bother. Have a good day
Hi TheChimp I'm still here, checking up on the comments seeing if any need an answer!
lilyflower I'm very impressed
I was even more impressed when you brought up my glass bottle post. I didn't realize that I hadn't replied, so you've definitely got one up on me
When it comes down to it, I'm not really fussed whether the OP replies or not as long as it starts up a good conversation.
lilyflower I can see that and I'm considering a comeback.
I think that I might have a half tot of Bushmills and think about a reply
Certainly quite frustrating whenever that happens. It feels like I am answering a survey rather then getting myself involved in a conversation.
I'm not really fussed whether an OP of a post keeps track or not.
As long as it starts up a good conversation/debate, I'm not bothered.
Why is that some post a chat asking for help/advice and then don't respond to the help/advice given by others? The person who responds has quite often spent time looking for the answer.
