18 years after their last album of original material and an incredible 61 years after their formation the Rolling Stones today announced a new album. Live dates will likely follow. Mick Jagger recently turned 80. Keith Richards will reach that landmark before the end of the year with Ronnie Wood a mere 76.
There are plenty of others who are still rocking stages and leather trousers when they might be expected to be rocking chairs and cardigans.
As long as they are able to do so I think it's great that we see them live and hear new material.
What are your thoughts? Which veteran bands from the 60's, 70's and 80's are still releasing great albums and putting on great live shows and are there any that you feel are letting themselves and audiences down and should retire with some dignity intact?
I am not a fan of rock music let alone The Rolling Stones. But they are all old,old men who should have some decency to stop recording and doing live tours. They are all past it. I blame the music media for keeping them "alive" by reporting on their private lives, free tickets to their concerts, free whatever to keep them in the public eye.
jam45 I am a fan of rock music and many of my favourites have been around 40 or 50 years and are still going strong. I've never been more than a casual fan of the Rolling Stones and whilst I would like to have seen them live their tickets tend to be very expensive.
Tom Jones just about to go on tour as well.If you can still sing and play like these guys do keep it coming I say!

Jerseydrew Some of the veterans keep going though we lose more as time passes. The music lives on but we need to appreciate our favourites whilst we can.
I can't say I've delved deep into their back catalogue but they have some era defining songs that are still played regularly today. Their longevity is amazing and it's surely not about money at this point as they are all loaded. Every time they tour it's in the top 5 grossing tours of the year.
jms19 I agree. I appreciate some of their work whilst not being a huge fan. Their longevity is incredible. When you look at the blues clubs that they started in to the enormous stadium productions they got to it's some journey.
I have only one thing to say about this, would you see a girl group in their 70s and 80s still performing?

No, I'm struggling there. I could maybe think of a few in their 60's and there are female performers such as Dolly Parton, Diana Ross, Stevie Nicks, Deborah Harry etc still playing live.
