Should more of us be growing our own Fruit & Veg?

With shortages on a lot of fresh produce, it could be a way to ease it but it would mean eating only seasonal fruit and veg 🥕

In a word, YES.

If you have any free space I would grow something edible if for no other reason than it tastes far better than anything that the supermarkets sell. It's a very satisfying pastime too.

I grow a great deal myself and freeze both fruit & veg for later in the year when it is out of season.

I agree with tumblespots They taste better than shop-bought, the work is great exercise and a huge plot is not necessary. Freezing excess produce is the key to saving money.

Yes absolutely. We have a small patch we use in the garden to plant things with the kids because I think it's important for them to learn how things grow.

I've tried to grow my own, but I'm terrible at it. I always end up killing them😭. I've only ever managed to grow one tomato and I was over the moon about it. Never got anything after that😂

SalmaS Start simple , any cherry tomato plant can be easily raised from seed in a pot on the windowsill (now is a good time ) . Then plant out 2 or 3 of the resulting plants in a container or hanging basket end of April - middle May and let them do their thing , just requires water and a bit of fertiliser from time to time and you will have literally hundreds of tomatoes from July to September .

Absolutely! It comes up way cheaper and healthier than genetically modified fruits and vegetables we find in supermarkets. Besides it being a great time passing activity in nature wether be it a small private garden or a big community garden.

I grow my own chillies, I would grow more but for lack of space. There are allotments close to where we live but no one uses them to grow vegetables.

Most people (I was the same at one time) don't want to put the effort to grow their own veg/fruit but if they tried they would be surprised and the pleasure at seeing there efforts rewarded with all the fresh produce. There is however the small problem of British weather and the slugs devouring your plants. But it's always nice to pull your own cucumbers fresh of your plants and have them for lunch 😊

I would love to but not sure how as our german shepherd would destroy anything he could get in contact with.

I grow my own just enough for my other half and I during the summer, it tastes so much better and is cheaper. I do however get insects etc eating them before they are fully grown, so have to re-seed and start again, or sometimes have to buy the plant when I'm not successful 🌿😁

I had thought about growing strawberries in pots at the back of the garden, but I don't trust my dog not to eat them. My parents have been growing their own fruit and veg for years. They do tomatoes, cucumber, plums, apples and pears. They also grow strawberries although I think the blackbird gets more of them than they do. We used to grow potatoes when we were younger too.

Stick to the supermarket instead. I have better things to do than growing my own fruits and vegetables and watching the neighbour's coming into my garden and using it as a toilet. And eating my food as well.

Problem is we are now used to such a vast variety of fruit and veg all year whether in season or not , can't see that many of us being happy to take a step back in time and eat only seasonal produce, also to grow your own you are reliant on the weather and that is far more random than it used to be making it more difficult to grow your own these day.
