Vitamins - Do We Need Them?!

Help

So I am wanting to start the year as the healthiest me I can be, and vitamins keep coming up. But do we need to take vitamins, and if so, which ones should we prioritise? I see the multivitamins packs in boots but still pretty expensive. Any advice would be hugely appreciated.

Vitamin supplements are a good idea for when you feel as if you aren't getting enough of that vitamin from your food and other natural sources. For example, I take cod liver oil supplements because I never eat oily fish and we don't get enough sun (especially at this time of the year).

Cod liver oil is probably one of the best and cheapest supplements available, At Aldi one a day

500mcg capsules are 99p for 90 and 1.000mcg are 99p for 50 (might possibly be cheaper elsewhere but at those prices hardly worth looking) I take the 1,000mcg.

It can cause blood thinning if dose is too high so anyone who might be adversely affected should check with their GP before starting. and are best to always check out any supplement before starting.https://www.webmd.com/vitamins/ai/ingredientmono-1040/cod-liver-oil

davidstockport Thank you for the info. Very useful. 👍

And yes, having too much of a good thing can become a bad thing. Just one a day. That's all that's needed.

Supermarkets own brand are probably cheaper and if you wait for a 3 for 2 offer doesn't work out too bad.

im not really a fond of taking any pills at all including vitamins.. 😃 I only take them when it is needed.. 🙂 i make up with it by eating good healthy food; keeping myself healthy through enough rest and exercise.. 🙂 so far all has been good and no chronic illnesses, thank God.. my first and only confinement is when I delivered my baby that's all.

just have a varied diet so that you can cover your vitamins with food. You might struggle with D though, as there is not much sunlight over the winter periods, so you may want to take supplements, or go on a holiday for a top up

I agree - especially about vitamin D - some good sources are Cod Liver Oil, milk and mushrooms. Some mushrooms which have been subjected to sunlight (or a UV lamp) are much higher in vitamin D - whereas those grown in the dark have negligible quantities.

It's as if mushrooms actually gather sunlight for us.

davidstockport thanks for sharing. I’d rather have the mushrooms than the pill forms 👍

hspexy I like mushrooms too - I got some of the "special" ones that had had the sun lamp treatment they didn't taste much different - but they had a lovely tan😀 🤣

davidstockport lol I will have to look out for them. There is a guy who sells all sorts of mushrooms near me, so I will have to visit him soon and ask him for some 'special' ones 😜

Irish moss is a source of potassium chloride, a nutrient which helps to dissolve catarrhs (inflammation and phlegm in the mucous membranes), which cause congestion. It contains compounds which act as natural antimicrobial and antiviral agents, helping to boost immunity and get rid of any infections.

Yes. It is because the vegetables and fruits are loosing their vitamin and nutrition content.

There are some vitamins which are a bit rare and easier to take them. Folic acid and vitamin D is important... The last one we not getting enough, because of the Sun is not shining and we are not chewing on carrots all the times.

if youi eat well you should never need to take anything other than vitiman d in the winter. you need to have fruit and veg everyday and a good selection of greens dairy and protein to keep you at your best

You can ask your GP for a free health check, do a blood test and they'll tell you exactly what vitamins you need to intake.
