Why Do Shops Not Prosecute Shoplifters When Value of Goods is Less than £200 ?
Ask a Question
Why is it that the majority of the high street shops do not prosecute shoplifters if value is under £200, surely the shops are just giving the go-ahead to steal, and what example is the showing our children???
It certainly sounds like it! So shop lifting isn't shop lifting any more! As long as you only want to steal goods under £100 it OK! What sort of message does that send to criminals? - Just steal a bit at a time. Don't forget though - the rest of us are paying more for our shopping to accommodate their stealing.
Ridiculous isn't it. I don't agree with it. They need to change back to looking into it. Part of the reason people are stealing nappies is cos prices thanks to other shoplifters
It's £200 not £100, my mother in law works in a Sainsbury's mini market, we've told her to pack it in because shoplifting is out of control in her store, she's been threatened with a knife and is constantly abused by these scumbags
martinlufc5637 thanks for letting me know about the amount......and that's shocking about your mum in law being threatened and abused by folks whom just don't have any morals......the folks whom are the abusers, don't they ever think that it could be their sister, mum, gran or wife working in the shop like you've mentioned, and getting abused........no definitely not right at all......sending all the best to your mum in law and please stay safe!! (easier said than done these days!!)
martinlufc5637 each company has their own policy i believe so it may be £200 for Sainsbury’s but then Tesco will have a different amount.
The thing is this sort of thing takes time and the companies obviously deem the time spent pursuing a conviction to not be worth the effort
jms19 police told them not to even call them for shoplifting, so it's absolutely out of control in her store
Jackscot you're bang on there, but are happy handing money out to other countries, they should start with problems nearer home!!
They don't prosecute if the value is under £200. Most of the time the police will only come out if the value is over £200. It probably costs more to prosecute them than the amount that has been stolen. I think that there needs to be a punishment for shoplifting, even if it is only £20. There needs to be consequences.
MrsCraig totally agree, cos basically it's taking the mickey out of folks whom work real hard......I've actually just shut my eyes to visualise these sums whom are doing it and yeah, they really don't give 2 hoots do they?? They government, like you said, should prosecute no matter if its a 10p or 10 million, it still comes down to taking something without paying for it!!!! Thanks for your comment, got me thinking.....
Bonnylass3 absolutely, my husband and I go out to work each day so that we can afford to buy stuff for us and our son. I understand that people are struggling but shoplifting means prices go up and that means more people struggling.
They're afraid of violence and security guards these days aren't going to stop shoplifters as they normally have nothing in terms of self-defense protection.
Absolutely disgusting, my sister has seen it all in her job with the Co-op,a job she has been in 43 years..
The horror stories she's told me & the staff are powerless to do anything..
janphoenix51 1st of all please keep safe and also I take my hat off to the hero's like your sister, a job is supposed to be a place of safety!! Bull!!
Bonnylass3 ...Remember the Cannibis fueled man Nathan Summer who nearly hacked policewoman Lisa Bates to death in Sheffield with a Machete,April 2016, he fled to MY sister's branch of the Co op & although my sister wasn't on duty as Assistant Manager she was the one cleaning up the blood the day after. Summer was in the Co op causing chaos after attacking Lisa.
Lisa was lucky to be saved by HERO Simon Ellis who lived on the block of flats where Summer's gf lived.Lisa only went to a domestic between Summer & his gf after the gf called her.
Summer was found NOT GUILTY of attempted murder of a Policewoman..
No justice whatsoever..
janphoenix51 wow that's totally disgusting, attempted murder, should be in jail definitely doing life!! Scum bag!!
It's pointless prosecuting if there is no punishment. At some point we are going to have to come to our senses and stop being so idealistic and get more realistic. We need a referendum on many issues where people are given choices and those should be instigated in law because they have a mandate from the people. That way you don't have moronic idealistic people who never have any real world solutions going on about the human rights of vile individuals. The punishment may mean complete non access to NHS services, denial of all benefits and being basically used as slave labour for a period of time in fields with a ball and chain. However I certainly don't think punishment should come in immediately as severe. It should be stepped so someone who commits the same crime repeatedly gets worse and worse punishment. Ultimately if they keep committing crime they become a slave of the state and basically spend their time in fields doing basic labour.
I know I keep saying it but we are becoming a much poorer country and there is going to be more poverty and deprivation and so more people are going to be in a terrible financial situation. As we become a poorer country there will be more pressure on people to be criminals and that's why the punishments need to be more severe to act against such pressure. At the moment there is a strong feeling that criminals get away with it which means many people would expect to get away with it too if they commit criminal acts.
There's simply to many and the police rarely attend unless something drastic happens. A small percentage steal because they need to, mostly its their job or they sell stolen goods to support drug habits ect. Which means they also know shop staff have no powers to stop them and they're up for confrontation. Store are held up by knives daily why should a staff member risks their lives for a minimum wage job where your treated like crap!
