Co-op Membership: How Does the Loyalty Scheme Work?

The Co-op has a rewards scheme called Co-op Membership. If you join, you’ll get access to exclusive offers, discounts and rewards. In this guide we’ll break down everything you need to know about the Co-op Membership rewards program.

What is Co-op Membership?

Co-op Membership is the Co-op’s equivalent of Tesco Clubcard or Nectar. It is one of the most generous supermarket loyalty schemes. Co-Op Membership allows you to access offers, discounts and rewards on your shopping. You can stack these on top of Co-Op deals.

Unlike other supermarket loyalty schemes, you have to pay to join Co-op Membership. It costs £1 to join the Membership programme.

Once you become a member, you can scan your membership card in the Co-op app on your phone when you do your shopping. You may also receive a physical card.

How do I join Co-op Membership?

You can become a Co-op member here.

You’ll need to fill in your personal details, and then you’ll be asked for your payment details. It costs £1 to become a Co-op member.

Alternatively, you can pay £1 in-store where you’ll be given a temporary card. You can then enter the eighteen digit card number to complete your membership online and get a permanent digital card.

Once you have signed up, you can download the Co-op app, log in and view your digital membership card.

Co-op Membership rewards

When you buy selected Co-op products, you will get back 2p for every pound spent. This will go back onto your Co-op membership account, and they’ll also match the amount you’ve earned and donate it to community organisations and good causes.

The money you earn back is essentially 2% cashback, but it’s worth noting you won’t get this on every product you buy, only on selected Co-op products and services.

The reward money you earn can be spent on anything you buy at the Co-op however, not just Co-op products.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you don't use your Co-op Membership card for a year, the Co-op may wipe the money you've earnt, so it's worth keeping an eye on the cashback you've earnt.

Personalised Offers

Every week you can choose two offers to use on your shopping.

Before you head into store, you can look at the offers section on the Co-op app or website. There will personalised offers on items that may be of interest to you.

You can select the two you want to use, and then the next time you shop and scan your membership card, you will get the deal.

Exclusive Member Deals

You’ll also get access to exclusive deals for members only. These are similar to Tesco Clubcard offers. You can find these on the Co-op website under ‘exclusive member deals’ here.

These offers usually allow you to save a certain amount on selected products or ranges.

For example, at the time of writing this guide, some of the exclusive member deals available include saving £1 on selected pizzas and flatbreads, and getting the Valentine’s Meal Deal reduced from £20 to £16.

IMPORTANT NOTE: These Member offers were available at the time of writing this guide. Member offers change regularly and may no longer be available.

Discounts across Co-op Businesses

If you’re a Co-op Member, you will also get discounts across Co-op businesses, as well as the food stores.

This includes their funeralcare, insurance and legal services.

As always, make sure you compare prices. Just because they’re offering a discount doesn’t mean this will be the best value option for you. So, it’s worth doing your research before going ahead.

How does Co-op Membership compare to other loyalty schemes?

Image

If you shop at the Co-op it’s absolutely worth joining their loyalty program. For £1 you’ll have access to cashback, exclusive offers, member only deals and discounts across the Co-op’s other services.

It’s one of the few supermarket loyalty programs that charges a fee to join, but it’s a one off cost of £1. Once you’re in, you can enjoy the perks for as long as you’re a member.

In terms of comparing Co-op Membership to other loyalty schemes, Co-op has positives and negatives.

With the cashback, you’ll only earn it when you buy certain Co-op brand products. When you do earn it, it’s only 2p for every £1 spend, so that’s 2% cashback. Other supermarket schemes such as Nectar will give you cashback on your entire shop. Or, you may get more cashback on selected products, for example with ASDA Rewards you’ll get 10% back on selected products. So, anything’s better than nothing, but other supermarkets are more competitive with their cashback incentives.

But, Co-op offers more than cashback. Similarly to Tesco Clubcard, you’ll get Member deals in store, including discounts on meal deals and specific products or ranges.

As with Marks & Spencers Sparks, Nectar and ASDA Rewards, you’ll also get exclusive member offers based on your shopping preferences. Co-op does have the drawback that you can only use two of these offers per week.

So, though it’s not the best supermarket loyalty program, the rewards definitely make it worthwhile. If you shop at the Co-op, it’s absolutely worth paying the £1 to join.

I’m using this for a while now and it’s ok. They’ve reduced the money off products to 50% this year if I’m not wrong, but still worth using it
