It’s always a treat going to the cinema to catch a movie, but when you think about the ease and cost Netflix or Amazon Prime at home, paying to watch a film can seem like a pricey extravagance - until now.

Savvy saver Emma Farrell, from Wrexham, a member of the LatestDeals.co.uk money-saving community, has the ultimate guide to saving money at the cinema.

Emma, 42, a mum of four boys aged between two and 22, shared her money-saving tips with LatestDeals.co.uk, publishing an article detailing some of the best ways to save money on cinema tickets.

Her top tips include signing up to Meerkat Movies for a year of two-for-one cinema tickets (see our guide here: https://www.latestdeals.co.uk/news/mum-bags-2-for-1-cinema-tickets-meals-whole-year-just-239), buying Odeon tickets through Groupon and buying discounted gift cards from Tesco and using them like cash.

Emma advises stocking up on gift cards when they are discounted at Tesco (which is about every three months), and also signing up for Meerkat Movies and Meerkat Meals by buying 24-hour travel insurance for just a couple of pounds.

Emma told LatestDeals.co.uk: “I think the very best way to save money on cinema tickets is with the gift cards trick. Stock up when they come on offer so you get a £25 Odeon card for £20 which you can use just like cash.

“I get Meerkat Movies cinema tickets on a Tuesday or Wednesday for £5 for two (£2.50 pp) if I just turn up and don't book online but if I use my Odeon gift card to pay, I actually only pay £4 in real money - £2 each - which is great as you can see the latest releases and are not restricted.

“You pay £2.50 for the kids’ club on a weekend per ticket which are old films. So if you buy a £25 gift card for £20, two people can go to the cinema five times with Meerkat Movies.”

Emma has other tricks up her sleeves when it comes to using gift cards, also making sure she can bag cheaper meals for her family.

“I buy the other gift cards and stack them with the Meerkat Meals, so in my area, I can use them in Pizza Express,” Emma adds. “It’s buy one get one free on starters, mains and desserts so if I buy a gift card at 20% off I can get two Sloppy Giuseppe pizzas for £11.60 but pay with my gift card (£20 at 20% off, so £16).

“In effect I only pay £9.28 for two pizzas and cheekily ask for a jug of tap water so we can go to the cinema and have a pizza each for £13.28.”

Tom Church, Co-Founder of LatestDeals.co.uk, added the following advice,

"If you live in London you may be astonished to read that elsewhere in the UK people are paying £5 for an Odeon cinema ticket, compared to your £15. You may not be able to get it for quite as cheap as Emma, but the advice still applies. Meerkat Movies will make it £7.50 per ticket, and with 20% off through gift cards, that'll be just £6 per ticket."

"To get Meerkat Meals for as little as £2, go to Compare The Market and get a quote for a single day's travel insurance. Some say you don't even need to buy it... just getting the quote is enough."

"An alternative approach is to sign up for a free trial of Tastecard. This comes with up to 40% off cinema."
