The statue, Alfred the Great, in Trinity Church Square, Southwark, which was thought to be medieval & was considered to be the oldest statue in the capital. However during recent conservation, stone masons have found that the bottom half is 2nd Century, Roman, of the goddess Minerva

This doesn't surprise me. Firstly, The work of a stonemason is time consuming and expensive. Stone and Marble, extremely costly, and often masons would work with what is around them, so this is possibly just a form of recycling in the mason world of sculpture. Good find though, very interesting. Thanks you
