Lidl to Trial Removal of the 9p Carrier Bags and Replace with 38p One

In the News

Just read in the news that Lidl are to remove all their 9p carrier bags in an initial trial in their Welsh stores by May 1st and replace them with a 38p bag instead.

Do other feel this is a good idea or just an extra cost to pay for your shopping? Would you still shop at Lidl if they introduce this Nationwide following the Trial? Lidl the discount supermarket are already only pennies cheaper than the other stores

I don't shop at lidl as our local one is too small to do a full shop and with a little one it is too much hassle to go to two different stores. If I did shop at lidl I would just make sure I always had bags with me. I always keep some in the boot of the car anyway.

I think it is just a way of making extra money

I shop at Lidl all the time and the people that do their big shops there always bring our own bags anyway. This is just for the convenience shopper who just popped in because it was the closest for something they need and if it's just something small they probably won't buy a bag and if it's big then they will because they need it. It's a really good idea actually!

This kind of change would not be necessary if people recycle their rubbish properly. These are the results of the lack of human empathy.

I'm with you on this one - cavalier attitude about recycling never ceases to leave me open mouthed. I just hope we learn in time.....

If this stops those who "don't give a damn about the environment" using the 9p multiple use bags only once then it seems like a good idea to me.

Of course it's an extra cost to shopping but easily avoided by not shopping for (and paying for) plastic bages on a regular basis... I haven't bought one for many years! I also, before the compulsory charge, avoided shops who supplied them supposedly FREE but inflated their prices to charge for them.
