Poundland Isn't a £1 Store Anymore, Should It Close Down?

Ask a Question

The days of when it was all £1 are over and you can generally find cheaper products at grocery stores (or supermarkets). For me, I'm just done with these stores as their prices are overpriced for what it is.

Heck, they should rename it to Poundland+ because it's more than one pound.

Poundland is a business, but they were a means of people buying cheap food and other products whereas these days you look at the price and not even pick it up.

I used to say this all the time but now I am thinking its a throw back name to a time when it started out but so long as its value its okay. BUT ideally a name change would be nice

Yes I think it should be called Poundland Plus now as there is not much for a pound these days. I don’t think they need to close down though, still useful products.

JLouM Poundland Plus would be a good name if they had a good selection of items that are still priced at £1 but it seems most things are priced over £1 now, so maybe it should be called OverAPoundLand or as I suggested below, Fiverland 😂

It's still a good value store compared to many others although supermarkets can be cheaper for food items. I guess with inflation it was always going to lead to a point where £1 was not achievable. It is still a high turnover low margin store.

I don't go into my local pound shop. It's not that great. Though its going into a cheap supermarket selling sugary stuff that I'd rather not buy anyway

deborahwil81986 WD40 was £1, and now it shot up to £1.50. Won't be long till it's bumped to £2 and £3.

Lots of cheap tat the last time I went into one (over a decade ago). Sounds like it's gotten worse. Supermarkets were often cheaper. There's a it's only a pound mentality, but if you compare to elsewhere or look at unit price, it was always expensive. Quality is usually pants too.

I like the clothing section in Poundland, it's good quality and reasonably priced. I don't buy anything else really. The name doesn't bother me.

Poundstretcher should go first in my opinion as it's ######

No. I think due to economic climate it cannot keep going on things for one pound

patarule They see people are buying no matter what so they keep inflating the prices. Got to vote with our wallets.

I used to buy Sainsbury's Paella (by Bird's Eye), but they too increased the price, it was £2.75 in 2022 and now £3.15, it's a difference of 40p and a really good meal for what it is, though the point is that at £2.75 it was an excellent deal.

I'm guessing it'll eventually be bumped to £3.50 and then £4.00. :/

It's the same as the pound bakery, you can't buy anything for a pound anymore in there.

stevea808 I've never heard of them and don't remember seeing one, but I would have just assumed it was called Pound Bakery due to the Pound cake which is a bake. I wouldn't have thought it was to do with Pound coins.

DeBunny it was called the pound bakery originally, because everything was a pound or less.

In 2015 Poundland were forced to change their statement that 'Everything for £1'

'Poundland can no longer state or suggest that every item it sells costs £1, following an Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) ruling.'

The internet also said that a store was supposedly put up 'Otherland' then they revealed the 'M' so it was Motherland but despited by the owners of Mothercare. So they changed the signs to Parentland. I know many people that aren't parents and those that can't be parents without adopting, so this really wouldn't be suitable in my eyes. I don't think it was a serious suggestion though.

There are also reports that say that Poundland stand by their name as they make your Pounds go further. I guess Savers is already taken. 'Bargain Buys / Pound Stretcher' again taken.

I've found some decent items in Poundland and I do like having a look around. But I certainly don't pick up near to what I used to. 'Decent Deals' or just 'Nice Finds' might be okay. They would need to put a HUGE amount into rebranding and everything, so the name they choose would have to be perfect. And it is hard to please everyone. At least we all know Poundland and are talking about it, any talking (good or bad) is free advertising.

They should completely change their name as its misleading. Only go in for decorative stuff and pretty much everything else can be bought cheaper elsewhere Temu, Amazon or Ebay to name a few that are always my first port of call

I always enjoy a wander around Poundland but yes we have been saying the same about the prices for ages, just means you have to shop around a bit more now and compare the prices. Poundland Plus would be a better name.

I rarely go into my local one in town here unless I’ve 1 of the grandkids with me as they usually find something they like in there. Usually arts and crafts is the thing they go straight for but even youngest 1 asks why it’s called Poundland and the items are more than £1

Agree that it shouldn’t really carry the name of Poundland when it isn’t
