Watercress Voted the Worlds Healthiest 'Vegetable', do you like it ?

In the News

Who would have thought it, the humble watercress has been voted the worlds healthiest food on earth

I love the taste of it , the stronger and peppery the better for me and it's cheap to buy

And so easy to grow too , even in the kitchen

Love it on a salad , do you eat watercress ?

I don't mind it but wouldn't eat on its own. They used to sell it on the streets in Victorian times, sometimes the only way the kids could earn some money if they weren't already up chimneys or down mines.

Lynibis I didn't know any of this. The two supermarkets down my road doesn't sell healthy food of this sort. They both sell only what their customers will buy. I will be going to a proper supermarket like Asda or Tesco and buy some watercress later this week.

The next cheapest vegetable after onions was watercress. The watercress season runs from April round to February. It was sold in bunches and sold for only half a penny for four bunches. Although they probably didn’t know it at the time, watercress is high in iron and fibre and so a decent food to eat on a daily basis. Working class people regularly ate it for breakfast along with bread, cheese or cold meat left over from the night before, all washed down with weak beer.
