What's Everyone's Thoughts about Celebrating Halloween?
Ask a Question
I wondered what everyone's thoughts are about if halloween is just for children to dress up and knock random people's door for sweets? Or is it something all ages celebrate?
Mainly kids I would say. Never agreed with the knocking on doors. We used to have a party in the garden when we were little. A way of keeping kids occupied when it gets cold and dark in winter and too early for Christmas. As adults we go to themed quiz nights but that’s it.
For me it's for the kids I would take my trick or treating but only to my friends houses that know they was coming
If kids are of the 'right age' and you know your neighbours, I think trick/treating can be fun for them. Otherwise, I don't support it and wish strange kids would stop loudly knocking on my door for sweets!
Never liked the idea of kids knocking on our door asking for sweets
No idea who they are or if they even live nearby!
Thank goodness past few years we don’t get them anymore
vixe80 just had a kid come running down driveway knocking on side door heard footsteps
It’s cause living room lights are on didn’t draw curtains and I said no sorry
Didn’t hear knocking on either of neighbours’ houses
Wouldn’t it be obvious if houses had Halloween decorations means they are welcome?! to go to those houses
Don’t go randomly knocking on peoples houses just cause they can see lights on inside pfft
I don't decorate my house as I don't want people knocking my door. I wouldn't mind if it was our sons friends but not random children that I don't know.
Personally I love it, but I dont have any kids of my own,so spent years taking nieces and nephews trick &treating, once they all grew up I started putting on a display in the front garden for the local kids, love seeing their little faces and outfits when they come knocking
slightfoot this is the kind of thing I wondered about. I have a few houses in my road (who I know don't have children living there) that have really decorated - as much as Christmas. I wondered if people enjoyed the giving/ being part of community
vixe80 yes I have similar house that do Xmas lights ect, butts to pricey for me on the electric so I decided to be the Halloween queen of the close instead, I've spent the last 2days out the front scooping and carving my giant pumpkins, loads of neighbours have stopped for a chat in the way past, got to know a new family that have moved in across they way, another neighbour keeps quail in the back garden so they've had a bucket of pumpkin flesh of me, it's great
slightfoot I love how it has brought you closer to neighbours - maybe that's what it should be about. Not kids eating sweets. But community.
vixe80 yes it really has got people talking, and we had a nice steady stream of kids knocking last night, and they all commented on the giant pumpkins, had a few requests for plants/seeds so they can have ago at their own next year, love it x pic is us weighing one of them
vixe80 it was 200lb, and the other one210lb, but it's not the biggest we have ever grown on our allotment, our personal best was 6 years ago, a 22 stone beast, got 6th place at the national championships that year
slightfoot wow that is truly amazing. What do you feed them with to get so big? And do you use tye seeds from last years pumpkins or buy new each year?
vixe80 we do use the seed from one year for the next, but we started off with a special seed, a giant variety, plenty of water, hand pollinated, then flower closed with string to prevent cross pollination from bees, only let one fruit per plant grow to get them to max size
Not much choice when you have kids, they love Halloween, so have to accommodate for them, I don't like decorations personally
martinlufc5637 true, then they end up with a load of sweets - that you don't want them to eat! Or at least that's how it was in my house
Halloween is so much fun taking my 90year old parents to a Halloween party at their restbit home and we are all dressing up aswell I'm a witch my mum a devil full outfit and my dad a ghost as he has dementia and like anything over his head also my grand kids are dressing up and going it's my youngest sons birthday he autistic and be24 this time
jigsawx3x that is brilliant, we can't do hollowean at my care home it's salvationist, but we do a harvest Festival thing instead
jigsawx3x ,sounds fabulous, hope you all enjoy your night,I love to dress up as a witch & have the Purrrect companion ...My black cat Phoenix!!
I think it can be quite frightening for elderly people especially those who live alone. As a child in the 50s, we never did any trick or treating.Bonfire Night was more our thing and we always enjoyed the bonfires and fireworks.
I also think that the dressing up and costumes for Halloween can be expensive unless you make your own.
janphoenix51- adorable, i love tge halloween pose, and the eyes are saying halloween!
eyeballkerry ...Rolo is a beauty,is he all black too?
Love the scary fangs out look, just right for Halloween!
I was very surprised with the amount of children and adults out last night trick and treating. We had to drive from our village to town last night and people were all dressed up, even doing their shopping in fancy dress.
eyeballkerry I love that people were doing their shopping dressed up! How great is that
I grew up religious so never went trick or treating etc. Seems kids love it though and ofc adults can enjoy too if they have a party.
It’s lovely seeing small children dress up and they’re so delighted to get just a sweet. Of course they need to be with their parents to stay safe. A few years ago there was quite a group of teenagers knocking on doors but they wanted cash, frightened a lot in the community.
