Worried about Getting to Work

In the News

Tomorrow we have indefinite daily strikes going in the city by the bus drivers because they're not happy with their pay and working conditions.

This has left me and many others in a pickle regards to getting to work .. my work is far.. I can walk it but it will take over 2 hours together coming and going. They are running a select few buses on Sunday like service but I can imagine they will be absolutely jam packed and may not even turn up til every half hour. Daily Taxi fee will be too much.

Oh dear not looking good but I know the bus drivers have to cause as much disruption as possible lol

I used to say that whenever a bus driver goes on a strike, I will never complaint about it.

They earn a lot less than a train driver, in a 500% more stressful environment.

I am sorry about the disruption it will cause to you, but it is the only way hard working people can be heard.

kikogpe it's absolutely ridiculous for a bus service to go on indefinite strike , ours was 4 weeks long. No buses to whole areas of the city for a month is a nightmare.

Other people rely on the service to get to their own work, schools. Many people don't have alternative options and can't afford to lose a month's pay like the bus drivers did...

kikogpe I understand and sympathise with them.. I'm just going to be losing money so I hope it doesn't go on to long

ILOVEFANTA I understand the frustration as I am usually affected by strikes in London.

Nadiaparveen what a nightmare. Could you borrow or possibly buy a bike to get there. These things can go for some time so it might be worth the investment.

We went 4 weeks without buses to our area quite recently, the strike just went on and on.

ILOVEFANTA my workplace said no pay of you don't show up so it's going to be tough. I will try and figure out what to do thanks for your advise 😊

Nadiaparveen that’s a bit harsh of your employer. Can you check if others live near you that either drive and could pick you up or several share an Uber?

Nadiaparveen Pjran advice is good perhaps ask about lifts from other employees or possibly consider asking your local Facebook for lifts you might find a good Samaritan willing to help and you could offer to pay your bus fair towards the petrol. Sorry it's such a stressful time.

If it's just over an hour walk each way and your reasonable fit and healthy that isn't too unrealistic as the better weather should be coming and lighter evenings

ILOVEFANTA I've decided I will be walking. I waited for the bus for an hour and when it did come I was squashed when getting on the bus and these men were extremely pressed up against me from behind, to the point I could feel the one man's whole body shape. I felt so uncomfortable and another man told that man off for being so close to me.

Pjran I will most likely walk it. My colleague has offered for her husband to drop me off but I'm not sure about the timings as I work bit longer than her. The good thing is they said if we come in early we can leave early.

Nadiaparveen that sounds good. Obviously the manager has a conscience after all.

An ebike would be a good option. They start around £500. You need to work out the best way to get to work to avoid dangers if possible. Sometimes its better to take minor roads etc as you are travelling 5x walking speed you have some leeway to not ride directly to work if its safer not to. A small folding ebike might be allowed in the workplace to prevent theft and also easier to store in the home if you have a flat or small home.

Strikes are definitely designed to create maximum disruption. Hope you figure out your journey 👍

The bus operators are caught between a rock and a hard place. Many of them are desperately short of drivers so need to offer more pay to get them, whilst at the same time the only way they can get the money back to to stick up the fares which nobody likes. Some operators though like National Express are making decent profits so I am with the drivers mainly. Hopefully there will be a compromise...
