I Was a £10 POM

Other

When we arrived in Australia we had to go through a long drawn out arrival process. We were then herded on to bus/coach and taken to a camp which i suppose would be likened to an army base. We were housed in nissan huts, ours had a family room and a bedroom each end, 2 for 6 of us. The facilities were outside, communal showers and toilets, and also communal eating canteens.

Even accounting for the many years from then to now we were grateful but to have the facilities shown on 'the barge' we would truly have thought we had landed in paradise.

The irony of this? We were invited immigrants we didn't just rock up on their shores.....nuff said. A bit of gratitude wouldn't go astray.

I think i know the point you’re making but I don’t understand really how people know immigrants are ungrateful.

jms19 this morning on the news they said many of them are refusing to go on board. When I saw the pictures of the inside I was very surprised at how modern, clean and welcoming it looked.

Lynibis i mean this is the same old story they always seem to bring out when times are hard. I’d like to know specifically how many immigrants are ungrateful but there isn’t really a way of measuring it i guesd

jms19 you're quite right and as a general rule I never believe sensationalised headings in newspapers, or even on the news. It could be that a very small minority objected and they blew it out of proportion.

I think it is the lawyers that stir things up more

They put ideas into the migrants heads knowing the more controversy they cause, the more money they will get paid , they are making shedloads out of the migrants !!

They are just as bad as the people smugglers

If it was a choice between living on the streets or fairly luxury accommodation on this boat with comfortable beds and all meal and drinks , besides other perks , i would ****** their hands off

My god, "natch is not allowed ????

The trouble with the UK is it has a an extreme over population. We have about a 50% greater population density than China which is about 2 billion people but over a much larger area. We are only a small island and cannot support 70 million plus people which is the way it is going. Global warming means there will be many more crop failures and a lack of food and food security is the number one priority surely and realistically we need to depopulate the island as a long term goal.

I personally think no one should be accepted who come over by boats its as simple as that. Yes the official channels are slow and don't allow many people in but that is the whole point we are the wrong place to go to. The food trading deficit adds to our overall trade deficit. People need to realise for every home over £4000 now is being paid just to service the interest on government debts before you can even think about providing the services we need like the NHS, Police etc. We are becoming a much poorer country.

It's great we live in a multicultural society with many fantastic cultures co-existing but you have to be realistic not idealistic. What you think should happen isn't necessarily affordable.

There is a real crisis in Europe with many countries having huge debts. I just read there are 2 million people in Germany reliant on food banks and they are one of the richer countries of Europe but they have de-industrialised like the UK although I would argue not to the same extent and there is an underclass. Many German companies import goods from China and repackage them as Made in Germany but that means there are a lot less German factories than you realise and many goods like cars and bicycles are often assembled from parts mostly from China especially electronics.

I just think Europe and the UK needs to get a grip on this situation and collectively refuse to allow immigrants in via illegal channels. This actually has widespread support across Europe in the general population but politicians just aren't listening.

Governments should be focused on running the economy correctly with a trading surplus not working to some idealistic goals that are unaffordable and tie up huge resources.

The UK and Ireland are set to shrink with rising sea levels too so the population density will increase even if the population stays the same.

BonzoBanana as many know, I have always had a bee in my bonnet about population and no one knows the true figures as many disappear upon arrival, meeting up with friends and family already here.

If they are fleeing war and oppression why are most of them single young men? Do they just leave mothers, sisters, wives and children to their fate?

I really don’t understand why these immigrants aren’t content that our nation is supplying them with health care, benefits and a roof over their heads.

Pjran it is not fair that towns and cities be overrun with several hundred young, single men. Whilst I would not wish to imply they would not behave, we have enough problems with our own young men committing crime in gangs, drugs etc. I do not believe everyone coming in is pure in heart and mind and it is an historical and modern day fact that where there is a surfeit of young males there is invariably trouble. You have only to see the behaviour of those storming and pillaging supermarkets recently, are we going backwards to the Viking age?!

Pjran well that's very kind but unless you can offer ways of doing it and finding the finance it's a pointless argument. If the barge was safe enough for our British off shore workers then it should be acceptable for uninvited guests.

I may sound hard but believe me I would give generously to any refugee fleeing for their life from a war torn country but those coming for 'streets paved with gold' having already passed through many safe havens....no. We need to look after our own first. Crumbling nhs, education, dentistry, we are fast deteriorating into a 3rd world country. I may be simplifying but send them back to their own countries if they are safe to go, plane ticket is cheaper than the cost at present.

In the near future there are going to be 100s of millions of genuine refugees maybe 20-40 years from now due to rising sea levels and many countries are vulnerable with major cities being lost. Jakarta is going to disappear likely in our lifetime and thats 10 million people. It's going to get critical to protect our borders. We are an island so it should be easy to patrol the sea and intercept boats and prevent them from getting to our shores. It's clear largely unpopulated countries should take the lion's share like Australia and Canada and as a densely populated country we should not be taking such refugees. Other densely populated countries like Japan, Singapore etc should not be expected to take refugees either. However the UK, Japan and Singapore should be expected to come up with serious policies that reduce the birth rate to make themselves capable of providing enough food for themselves.

BonzoBanana well then it seems crazy not to put in place some sort of birth control law. Sod human rights, surely the survival of those already here should trump the right to have more than 2 kids.

Lynibis It's a very difficult situation as it should be a priority to reduce the birth rate but if you reduce or stop benefits related to having children of course you create more child poverty which is horrible. It's just a terrible situation to be in but we have to make hard choices. The UK should set a realistic long term population goal which is probably around 40 million and just work towards it over the years. It was something like 40 million I remember reading was a figure of what this island can support in regard food etc but that figure may be higher or lower.

I don't know if there is still large subsidies on meat production but if anything more efficient food production should be subsidised to push people more to a healthier vegetarian diet. I feel like mushroom production should be a priority and should make up more of our diet as it needs less resources and they can be produced more cheaply. We shouldn't be subsidising the most environmentally damaging foods.

When I saw the news I thought it would cause offence, many citizens are struggling to feed themselves so seeing refugees moan about conditions when they are being fed 3 times a day is not going to go down well.

I agree with many of Lynibis points. Many travel through other 'safe haven' countries with the belief that the UK has money dripping off every surface and will provide them with everything they need. While no doubt many are grateful, I've seen a few refugees/immigrants being interviewed on the news over the years, complaining about conditions or being moved from pillar to post. Yet they are safer here than in their origin country and many live better lives than British (homeless) citizens so I fail to see what's to complain about. Many are sold a dream about the UK that they have chosen to believe in. Once here, if it's so horrible, they should ask the government to pay for a plane ticket home.

I’m not against immigration or the country accepting people that are from war torn countries, these people need genuine help but we should not be accepting economic migrants arriving on boats. We just play into the hands of the criminals, who obviously sell the UK as the land of milk and honey. I’m concerned we could be letting criminals into this country. The lawyers are causing the issues with the barge and also not sending people back to their home countries (including those that have committed crimes here - why should we pay to keep them in our already overcrowded prisons)

I think there should be barges for the homeless people of this country, there seems to be more support available to those arriving on boats to those people on the streets (I expect they would like to be put up in a hotel until their situation is assessed) well that is how it appears to me, only my opinion

I'm sure the people traffickers are partly responsible for overselling Britain because they want the migrants to pay huge sums to get across the English Channel. I guess there would be less chance of profiteering if they end their migration in Italy or France as they can get to those more easily perhaps under their own steam. So the traffickers sell a dream to these people which is not reality. I think we also come across as a soft touch worried more about how we look internationally rather than looking at the economic picture of the situation. As I've written before I would not accept anyone in the UK that comes across this way illegally its as simple as that.
