2 Bacon Sandwiches a Week Can Increase the Risk of Type 2 Diabetes by up to 62%

In the News

This is really bad news for anyone who likes a bacon butty , like me, but it only gets worse

It's not only just two bacon sandwiches a week that could increase your risk of developing type 2 diabetes , up by possibly 62% more

They are even warning against a roast dinner, my second favourite meal

So it is unprocessed meats like roast beef and sausages that are the real culprits , increasing the risk by 46%

The only good news here is that if you are veggie and tend to eat nuts etc you can reduce the risk by 30%

You need a degree in mathematics to sort out the percentages, i would say i am in negative figures here , despite eating nuts daily

HELP !!

Bacon is a ultra processed food and often full of nitrates. I'm sure its a carcinogenic too. I have bacon perhaps 3 times a year as a occasional treat.

Everything in moderation. There is a bacon you can buy without nitrates. It’s called Naked brand. The downside being of course it’s expensive.

I waver in and out of D2 depending on how good my diet has been when 6 monthly blood test is due. I have probably only had 2 bacon sarnies this year but more roast dinners. Can't see how the latter is bad if you are having unprocessed meat, plenty of veg and a few roast potatoes and parsnips. I tend not to bother with yorkies these days.

Lynibis I hope that you're not talking about not having yorkies with roast beef, now that would just be wrong.

TheChimp I must admit I rarely eat roast beef, not because I don't like it but as it is only me it is not worth the expense. I nearly always go for chicken which does me 3 meals usually. But you are right, yorkies do complete a roast if it is beef.

Lynibis I know what you mean about the cost of beef. We normally only get it when it's on offer, along with lamb. But we are treating ourselves to some beef this weekend as MrsChimp has been away.

Looks like I'm going to get diabetes then, but a bacon sandwich is a bacon sandwich.

I take all of these reports with a very big pinch of salt. It was probably funded by vegans

TheChimp Ironically, vegans like eating meat tasting food, but not meat itself because they'd feel guilty of an animal dying to be on their plate. lol hypocrites

PhilipMarc I was having a 'discussion' with a vegan on FB yesterday. Trying to explain that being one doesn't mean that no animals are killed in the production of their food. Also trying to explain that it's just not possible for everyone on Earth to be vegan. It was quite frustrating smh

MelissaLee1 Most processed meat is dangerous to a point, burgers, sausages and especially hot dog sausages which are probably the most dangerous of all. Sliced meat like ham and chicken slices are pretty dodgy too. Then you have canned processed meats which can be more dangerous again. It's the consequence of people wanting meat products which are expensive to produce at much lower prices. So many products are based on low grade cuts of meat or animals fed with low grade food and heavy use of chemicals plus anti-biotics etc.

It's easy to produce high quality organic fruit and veg if you have your own garden but not so easy to produce high quality meats.

BonzoBanana I am a butcher's daughter so sadly rather addicted to meat.I have an allotment and I grow stuff.I love fruit and veg but sadly like all the unhealthy stuff a little too much as well.Just treated myself to some pre/pro biotics .Probably rather counter productive.

Sure; you have to be healthy most of the time to reduce risks. Many people will have around 100% poor nutrition then think taking supplements/vitamins makes up for it. It doesn't 🙄

Consumer I must admit I take a lot of supplements but also have a lot of very healthy salads. Some supplements are pretty much essential like Vitamin D in the winter months and just about everyone in the world has a potassium deficiency.

BonzoBanana I agree, some supplements are more essential for certain people, like Vitamin D. I do think it's important to remember though that it (as well as many other vitamins/minerals like potassium) can also be found in many different nutritious foods 😃

Consumer Potassium is so weird they say we need X amount of it but even with supplements you can't reach the recommended level. It's as if modern food just doesn't have anywhere near enough possibly depleted by modern faming methods.

Yeah, it's well known eating too much of it isn't healthy, but people still do it.
