£500 Fine Will Be Issued for Unchipped Cats

In the News

I always thought it was dogs that needed to be chipped but it appears cats do too

Not only recommended but now compulsory according to the article, or you risk a £500 fine

I don't know how the authorities will police this, cats roam free and are very difficult to catch unlike dogs

Imagine how much time it would take someone to pursue a cat to check for a chip, especially if it was up a tree

Does this mean that we are nearer to finding out which cat leaves 'presents' in other peoples gardens, although it's not DNA so it's hardly proof... or is it to keep a track on car burglars? Image

It would be great to find out which of these or their friends leave us "presents " regularly...

How I wish it would stop,it's only directly outside our back door,on our patio or lawn, never at the front door which is on the side of our house with a path running at side of it..

I HATE those " presents " sooo much that my partner has to leave the chain off our front door so I can go in that way & avoid the "presents"!

janphoenix51 You have my sympathies. I don't know how it could be done, but, the owners should be responsible for their animals 'presents'. If you know who it belongs to - give it back to owners with a note that says 'This belongs to you'!

tumblespots ...Someone left a small bag outside our front gate a few years ago containing Cat Poo..

Yes we have cats but I can't help it if they go into a garden & do their business,we encourage them to use a certain bit of our garden. We have our cat's friends visit us,poo & wee in our garden but don't go around bagging it up & leaving it outside the owner's door!

janphoenix51 This is why I don't have animals. I don't want to pick it up and I don't expect anyone else to have to deal with it either

janphoenix51 Unfortunately it is rare for cats to do their business in their own garden, saying that my cat does. She has two ‘special ‘ places. We have just got a kitten, who has started to wee on our grass but still uses the litter tray for the other.

Her name is Nelly and she has had all her injections, worming and flea tablets and be ready for the big wide world tomorrow. Well it’s actually our back garden. We are getting her and our other cat chipped next week

eyeballkerry ..Nelly is beautiful, hope she & your other cat get on & become buddies, our 2 used to sleep together on their blanket or in the blue box ,Topaz our torti always washed her black brother's ears before they settled down to sleep. My partner separated them & now they sleep near to each other, very rarely Topaz washes Phoenix's ears & they put paw on each other as warning to keep distance !

I find this sad that our cats aren't as close as they once were,Topaz wiill occasionally wash Phoenix's head & ears but not often & they do "kiss"each other but rarely!

janphoenix51 Nelly is trying to be friends with our other cat Kitty and there are getting closer everyday. They chase each other around the garden and they do eat together, each one wants to finish the other ones food!

My cat star is 20 now, only goes in the back garden, I will not be getting her chipped at her age, I don't care what the law says, but if I got another cat after her then yes I would get them chipped, the amount of cats that get taken to my local vets that don't find their homes because that are not chipped us surprisingly high, just last week they were looking for new homes for 2 cats due to being unable to reunite them with owners, soo sad

I think it’s a good idea to make it compulsory to chip animals but not to fine the owners! Maybe it’s a service vets could offer free of charge.

Pjran vets offering it free of charge? Haha you must have a lot nicer vets where you go, mine charge for everything

Pjran A good suggestion P, but that would never happen, a vet giving a free service , its like saying the council will empty your bins with no charge

jms19 yes but kittens need inoculations so it could be delivered then.

Pjran yeah that’s a good point, i know people on benefits can get their cats neutered for free so maybe they could do it at no charge.

This was taken to parliament in March.

I think all animals that can be chipped, should be. (Our rabbits are)

I don't understand why people don't, there is often a free or £10 services that happen now and again, it costs more to update your details though. If you have a pet I don't see why you wouldn't want to know what happened to it if they get lost or stolen, microchipping is a massive help to many animals getting home safely.

From the Gov website: www.gov.uk/government/news/treasured-pets-now-safer-as-microchipping-for-cats-becomes-compulsory

'All owners must have their cat microchipped by 10 June 2024 and owners found not to have microchipped their cat will have 21 days to have one implanted, or may face a fine of up to £500.'

I had a vision of the future today, don't laugh

A domestic device that could read chip inplants from a distance and let you know the owner of the cat in your garden

With AI intelligence moving fast now i dont think it is unreasonable to think it might not happen

That would put the cat amongst the pigeons, so to speak 😵‍💫

How long till they demand humans be chipped or there'll be a £500 fine? 😆

Probably shouldn't laugh because they did try to force everyone not too long ago to receive a certain shot or they'd be banned from the society.

I thought it was about health? Fast food isn't really healthy. Then again, people took these shots so they could "freely" fly.

You might not be far wrong P, people already have to carry ID cards, or even show their passport to fly as you said, or more modern airports are biometric with body x ray machines, so chipping someone can only be the next stage

It would be good to track criminals, like a tag but internal , but joe bloggs' privacy would go out of the window

Perhaps criminals should be chipped rather than the whole population, seem illogical to spend a lot of money chipping everyone.

BonzoBanana What is going to be the criteria for evaluating who is a criminal in the future? How many people are going to be guilt of "thought crimes" and "future crimes"?

I saw a similar article a while back, at least it is giving you adequate notice. I now have two to get done which will done in a couple of weeks time. Our kitten has just finished all her vaccinations so wanted to spread her vet trips out.

This is outrageous. It is well documented that chipping cats can cause neurological problems and can cause Cancer at the site of the chip. The chip can also dislodge and cause problems in other area of the body. I can not understand why this is compulsory just seems more control. I understand that if a cat is a farm cat they do not need to be chipped.

emaillorn I never knew that E, so would the same apply to dogs regarding the chip causing problems or is it because cats are more agile and tend to jump about more , ie at greater heights ?

I did find this on google

Are there negative effects of microchipping cats?

Microchipping Your Cat: What You Need to Know

However, you should educate yourself on possible side effects. For example, some cats do lose some hair after the microchip injection. The site may also have temporary swelling. Some cats develop an infection at the site, but your vet can prescribe medications like antibiotics to eliminate the issue.Dec 21, 2019
