Over 60s Third off Rail Fares

I guess many of you will already know about this, but I had no idea that over 60s could get a third off rail fares. A friend mentioned it to me in passing and kindly picked up the forms for me at a local station.
As I am definitely retiring at the end of the school year this will definitely be something I will make use of, especially for trips to London as it is murder trying to drive around the capital these days.
Did you know about this or already have one?
I didn't know about this but I will pass on the information to my dad.

Imo, it should be means tested. You could have millionaires over 68 claiming this, and if they're rich, they will.
Same with TV licences, if people have retired and on a big fat pension, they should pay for it along with the TV licence.
And don't start me on the well off claiming child benefits or whatever it's called now when people have an unlimited income. All down to admin costs to weed them out.
TheChimp I totally agree. There are so many things that rich and poor can claim and I can't see why it is so hard to say no one earning more than x amount should claim those benefits.
I can assure you though I have worked from 16 to 70 and this will allow me to enjoy my final years travelling with a friend at a reduced cost.
TheChimp ...Totally agree with you, my sister turns 59 in 6 days, suffers with Rheumatoid Arthritis doesn't claim a penny cos she works..Started off on a YTS with Co op & been there since, was Assistant Manager, would have been Manager but didn't want it. My sister did however share a lot of her old Mamagers jobs & he used to share his Christmas Bonus with her,only fair..

She's just moved Co ops,5 minutes from home, not as busy & more staff which helps her a lot as her husband of 35 years is recovering from a Stroke..

I get the Network Railcard. £30 a year and 1/3 off travel for up to 4 people. I usually get my moneys worth out of it

lilyflower ..My partner & I have a Two Together Railcard & our Student Radiographer daughter has a 16-25 Railcard, they come in handy for visiting our daughter & going places, Daughter's for visiting us & friends in other towns & cities..
Partner is off to Leeds by train today to meet daughter & finalise her move to a flat in Leeds for her next Placement while I'm working 3-10pm
15-19th May my partner & I are off to Newcastle for 5 days by train, we shall travel to Edinburgh, Northumberland & Sunderland by train while our daughter comes home by train & looks after our home, 2 cats & bakes my Birthday Cake ! x
janphoenix51 I also have the Two Together as it's not often I travel by myself, it's saved us loads on day trips and getting to airport. When you travel to Edinburgh from Newcastle sit on side away from platform (or nearest platform on return journey) and you'll get beautiful views of the Northumberland coast.

janphoenix51 Plenty of castles and walks along coast then but you will need a taxi to get to/from Alnmouth Rail Station

lilyflower ..Thank you,can you see Bamburgh Castle from South Shields, I'm sure my ex bf pointed it out years ago when we were on the beach there,he was from South Shields.
janphoenix51 Honestly can't say as I've never looked for South Shields from Bamburgh, but I would think not unless SS is at a greater elevation.
Just hit 60 and got an Oyster Pass but think that might be just in London .I just started a new job as well and the pass isn't valid before 9am so all but redundant for those of us who have to still work. The rail fare thing sounds great so thanks for sharing. Thinking about a Senior National Express card as well cos you can do return trips all over for £15.
Anyone with a bus pass can get 50% I believe off train ticket prices, not sure if this is everywhere or there are exclusions though
Rail fares are so expensive though. Reductions are nice but the starting price is high. I've used trains when there is a good promotion on but this is very rare. Seems like 3 or 4 years ago I last used a train. As a kid we went from Yeovil to Weymouth regularly in the summer and it was great but now its much more expensive than using the car. A quick look shows a return fair of about £24 to travel about 28 miles each way. So for two people close to £50. Even at half that price I wouldn't pay it.
Last time I used it to Weymouth I think it was £8 return as a promotional fare but it was the height of summer and British Rail had very few coaches attached to the train so it was like sardines in the coaches, very unpleasant. Each station we came to the people on the platform would look in and see no room in the coaches and curse and walk back to the station office probably to ask for a refund. Coming back was fine though.
According to this site train drivers earn on average about £60k and the highest recorded is £130k over 1/8th of a million pounds per year. Just seems like a heavily unionised service with ridiculous pay awards and consequently extremely high ticket prices nowadays.

Ultimately people are priced off the railway and use far less environmental solutions typically which is likely a half empty car or a diesel coach or bus.
rarely catch a train these days - but looking forward to getting my 60 card this time next year. Will make use of it then as it should bring the cost down a bit. There are some great deals on train and bus fares in Cornwall which I want to make use of!
You can also got a disabled persons railcard to get a third off rail fare if you qualify. I only know as a cousin of mine is epileptic and has one as well as having a disabled persons bus pass.
