Is 80 Too Old to Be Working?

Ask a Question

Let's talk about whether 80 is too old to be working.

Hollywood icon Harrison Ford, at 82, says he's still making movies because it gives him "essential human contact." What do you think—should there be an age limit, or does passion keep you going? 👇

I mean it’s definitely too old to be working against the person’s will but if they choose to continue that’s completely different.

If someone is able and wants to there should be no problem in doing so.

Depends what condition someone is in for the requirements of the particular job.

Depends on the job and whether the person wishes to continue.

If able and willing that's fine but I think we should spend time with family, friends while we yet can and pursuing hobbies and interests. If doing what you enjoy doing pays well then more the better.

Personally I'd say yes however if that person is comfortable and still able to do the job and enjoy it then fair play to them

For an actor probably fine but for someone working down a mine probably not. I think it makes sense to do a part time job when you get older that isn't too taxing as it can extend your lifespan as it keeps your fitness levels a bit higher and gives you purpose.

If the person IS fit enough to work & enjoys their job then why not.

It helps them, gives then a purpose to get up & do something with their lives.

80 isn’t that old. It sounds old and you can be old if you let yourself feel it. But you can do many things when you’re older - teach, learn, exercise…it’s not the end of your life

If the employer is happy to take on an elderly person then why not give them a job. That person has acquired lots of knowledge and experiences.

I left my last job because 3 of them were over 70, and not fit to do the job properly. Why should myself and the other younger staff have to pick up their slack, when we're all getting the same money? It killed my soul.

We worked in a care home, and every 2nd Saturday I was landed with doing 4 units while the other staff member did 1 unit. It killed me. She's doing 17 rooms and I'm trying to do 60? No way.

Jinky67 Blame the care homeowners who constantly find cheaper labour non-stop.

It depends on the person. If they are fit and able and they want to work then why not. It also depends on the job they are doing.

Like others have stated it all depends on what the job is and the abilities of the person, each to their own.

No if they are fit enough ,able to do the job and want to work, age should not be a barrier

If that person is in good health, and able to continue, then I don't see a problem with it. It's usually if you enjoy what you are doing.

It depends on the individual and the work involved. Many actors carry on until they drop because they love the job. Unfortunately other people have to continue working past retire age as they cant afford to live otherwise.

Depends on what you're doing. I don't think I could be doing what I'm doing at 82. It's really hard. I'm wrecked as it is

My neighbour didn't have a working paid job. She used to do her own garden and be on her hands and knees doing the weeding most days. She also used to unload the bags of compost from her car. She is 90yrs old and it is only since March this year she give up gardening due to heart problems. A remarkable lady ☺️

It definitely depends I'd say people shouldn't need to work at that age but he can definitely pick and choose jobs he does

You shouldn't have to work at this age but of course so should have the right to choose. Alot of older people do alot of really valuable work as volunteers.

Surely they shouldn't be an age range. I would have thought it's up to whether the person feels able too and wants to
