Do Adults Have Games Nights Any More?

Other

When young and kids in bed we used to have friends over for games night. Some would play cards, others Scrabble and even Monopoly. It was great fun with a few drinks, snacks and music.

I have a friend who loves scrabble and she is coming round tonight for a couple of games (she won hands down last time), a takeaway and maybe fit in a movie. Next saturday we are having movie night where i cook 3 of us a meal and watch a movie, we do that 3rd Saturday of each month.

Are these things a rarity now?

I love a game of scrabble. I don’t know too many people that do this. My friends and I would meet for dinner at one of our houses and watch a movie together.

My brother-in-law and his wife have games nights all the time, but they are a 2hr flight away - so we don’t do this with them often

PayItForward that's lovely to hear. I started playing scrabble with my granddaughter when she was 3 (with a lot of help of course) and I am sure it helped on her road to obtaining her Masters in English. She is now an English teacher.

We don't have game nights. We occasionally invite friends round for dinner but we don't own any board games or even a pack of cards. It's not something our friends do either.

MrsCraig I don't think I've ever known a house without a pack of cards lol. Used to play cards a lot, my favourite was canasta I have forgotten how to play it now, though I know you use 2 packs of cards.

Lynibis never had a pack of cards in our house. I had them at my parents house when I was younger but never had them in my own home. We used to play card games in our common room at secondary school.

MrsCraig have changed game name in last comment, didn't realise predictive had changed it😊 I am thinking games may be on the increase due to some of the comments, not surprised with the rubbish on tv!

Lynibis I enjoyed playing board games when younger but our son currently doesn't have the patience to play them, maybe when he is a bit older.

To be honest it seems game nights have actually come back into fashion. A lot of the towns/cities near me have board game cafes and i know a lot of people who get together to play board games fairly regularly.

Our daughter went to Sweden & Norway for 7 days with her two old school friends before joining her Da & I on holiday in Northern Ireland..

Daughter's friend collects playing cards so bought Northern Light ones from Norway which they played various games with at night after their adventures, her friend also bought a pack from Sweden..

Daughter & a different friend went to the Board Game Cafe in Sheffield & the friend bought our daughter a game for her birthday other year.

When my 5 siblings & I were growing up our Dad & Mum used to play different card games with us, we also had a Compendium of Games so played Ludo, Snakes & Ladders, Draughts etc...

janphoenix51 that sounds lovely. So sad families don't do that sort of thing any more, I think there would be much happier children with less problems.

Lynibis...

My partner, daughter & I used to switch the tv off at night sometimes & we would play Give Us A Clue or other games, sometimes she would put a play on for us..

We used to have games nights at my nana years and years ago. All my aunties and uncles and some cousins used to gather in my nana front room and have a wonderful time.

reannsgran that's amazing so good for children and families to bond doing things like that.

Lynibis it was really lovely. Sadly much of that bond died with my Nan. Not through anyone’s fault we just all kind of drifted apart over time. My nan really was the head of the family.

reannsgran that is so common. Things carry on out of habit but when an integral part of the habit passes no one seems to take up the mantle.

I had games night when I was little. I loved it would get together with my parents and brother. It was the only normal thing we did as a family. Played Monopoly, card games, Domino's and a game called Masterpiece. As a adult I still love Monopoly got lots of versions of them. I use to play with my now ex. But he's not interested anymore. So I'm thinking of getting rid of most of the Monopolys as I don't have anyone to play them with. I think it is a rarity now that people like playing games which is a shame.

KAW18 Same here, I do still have scrabble and monopoly, just in case, but being on my own I have loads of jigsaws as you only need one for them!

It's coming back in fashion. Young people don't have the money to go drinking in pubs nor do they want to as they are more interested in being healthy and save money for experiences. It's all for social media. It's fashionable as you can post it on social media. Being healthy and geeky is in. Where 40 years ago getting steamed was fashionable

No we don't play games, we get drunk and have a laugh, very rarely have them, but I always enjoy them when we have friends over
