Amazing Story of EKO and IKO the Albino Twins
In the News
I spotted this article on facebook today but i wanted to get more details before posting
So i found this daily mirror article that tells more of the story
It is a tragic case of exploitation which was rife in early history , this being in the 1920's
The two brothers were albinos and kidnapped from a field by a circus to perform there
They were billed as aliens by the circus that had crash landed in their spaceship in the desert ,which was believed by the gullible public
They were eventually found by their mother and the circus had to pay compensation to the brothers for the exploitation and what they had missed out on in life
But astoundingly they carried on working for the circus until the 1950's

It's crazy. Thankfully we've moved on since then and no longer accept this kind of thing.
Jerseydrew Most people have J but there is still stigma around people that look different even today , even if it is only bullying and not exploitation because of someones looks
I love Albino people I think their lack of melanin only makes them so beautiful and unique. Although not so much now, I did used to campaign for the Albino people of Africa. Unfortunately some African people believe that Albino people's bones are "magical" and they have gone far as to cut off their limbs (children are usually the targets).. sadly graves are dug out and people take the bones of the deceased Albino persons ..
It's incredibly sad but slowly but surely there is some change
Nadiaparveen That's so tragic N, i thought killing Elephants and Rhinos for their tusks and horns was bad enough but cutting off limbs is astonishing , the first i have heard of this
So i can imagine someone Albino back in the days of the twins would be fascinating to people hence what happened to them
Nadiaparveen To be honest I don't really know what an albino person looks like. No, I do not want to stare or comment about anyone. I am very pleased that you have shown an interest into these people by campaigning on their behalf. Well done, Nadiaparveen.
It is surprising that they continued to work for the circus but i guess at that point it was all that they knew
telmel - This is a very, very sad story and I am glad you have highlighted it. Like you said this was acceptable in the past and thank goodness it is not allowed now.
