I am sure it couldn't do any harm although I am not a doctor. But these things have healing properties which modern man has put aside, even though many drugs contain many of these ingredients. I expect the heat of the ginger would help with inflammatory things like arthritis. Alternatively essential oils can be mixed and applied and there are some good books around giving its uses.

Ginger has anti-inflammatory agents so it might be worth eating it rather than as a compress.

I'm not quite sure about arthritis, but MrsChimp steeps root ginger in boiling water and drinks it when she's got a sore throat. Seems to work, so there must be something in it.
