Are Baked Beans Healthy ?

Other

Baked beans are still relatively cheap even with recent increases, if you look around at different supermarkets you can find various offers

And they are convenient to cook, just emptying the tin in a bowl and microwaving for me is the easiest way to prepare them

But are they good for you , well yes and no

The actual baked beans are , nutritional with plenty of fibre

But you have to be careful with the sauce, the manufacturers put a lot of salt and sugar in them

So its better to get the low salt and sugar varieties

Also stick with the supermarkets own brands, they are cheaper

Or do you follow the iconic advert and only use this brand ?

Heinz beans are ok but slightly prefer the cheap supermarket beans myself, there isn't a lot in it though. Some meals I've bought out like an English breakfast claim to use Heinz beans and I think mostly they do. I don't really care about the difference though. Yes baked beans are not really healthy due to the salt and sugar added to the sauce, its a heavily processed food and should be in the bad camp. However just recently I had beans on toast which I haven't had for maybe 2 years and really enjoyed it. If I'm in a restaurant and fish and chips can either have peas, mushy peas or beans its always beans for me.

kitty88uk Beanz on a toast? That's something I've never done and probably never will, it's just not like me.

Rather a toast with butter or cheese.

I like HP or Branston the best, I’m with M1321 like them on a jacket spud or on toast both with cheese as a snack. I also like a tin of beans and sausages which I buy non branded. Heinz I’ve always found more sweet but all our taste buds are different.

I don’t think they’re unhealthy as there’s not any of the wrong type of fats (or so I think) it’s like anything eat in moderation

As they say, everything in moderation. Beans are a great source of fibre, but the baked beans are full of sugar. Also, too much could cause constipation

I only like Heinz beans, tried most of the others from different supermarkets, didn't like them, can't beat beans & toast for a quick cheap meal

I always have baked beans either on toast or with eggs, and i always put a good dollop of brown sauce over them , i think it compliments the flavour, not a great fan of tomato sauce unless over chips

I stocked up the other week on lots of Heinz products when Sainsbury’s had all Heinz at half price including snap pots of beans . Used to get the reduced sugar but tasteless compared to normal, mind you I’d rather the sauce and no beans 😂

It’s full of sugar, which I’m not a fan of. I don’t mind the beans themselves - they don’t need much enhancing to be tasty

I do find baked beans easy to enhance, I've often put a tiny bit of curry sauce in to make them curry beans myself or maybe piri piri sauce etc. The tomato sauce is a great base sauce to enhance with something else. In the past I had a basic pizza base but no normal tomato passata or similar to put on it so used a tin of beans and then added more stuff to it. It actually worked quite well as an improvised pizza, the flavour was better than how it looked.
