Ban "Zombie" Knives to Tackle Knife Crime?

Other

Knife crime and crime of any kind is obviously horrible, but banning knives of whatever type will decrease crime? No, they'll just use something else. What's next, ban cars as it can be used as a weapon?

This is a really lazy and unhelpful way to go about tackling knife crime. The police should check people randomly (stop and frisk) if they're carrying weapons and if they do, if they don't have a license or valid reason to carry it, then take action.

I will never understand why knife crime is so rife in the UK P ?

You don't see it happening in any other European country, at least not as much as here

Ok you have countries like the USA with people shooting each other, they are the exception, but knifing seems to be the chosen weapon in the uk, why ?

When did it start , i cannot ever remember it happening when i was younger , if you got into an altercation it was with fists

Why are youngsters so cowardly now that they need to stick a knife in someone and potentially kill them rather than throwing a few punches , which i don't condone either

It will only get worse if something is not done about it

Prison does not work so i don't know what will

Here is an article about it , it seems to have started in the early 2000

telmel Nobody knows the answer to knife crimes - no experts (criminologist?), teachers, parents. Frankly, there is no answer to ending knife crime. A pointless discussion of solving knife crime.

jam45 The question is still why is it happening here and nowhere else J ???. What is it about the Uk that makes people want to stab each other , the only reasons for me are a complete lack of discipline , a soft judiciary system and none existant corporal punishment. The instigators know all this and thats why they carry on without fear of retribution, its the 'can't touch me' mentality

telmel I know I will be castigated for this but I believe it is tribal. The world has developed into multi cultural countries (especially UK which is small and over crowded), and it is difficult for cultures to accept other cultures easily. Especially when the indigenous population is the one expected to adapt.

Lynibis I think that could also be part of the reason L . it makes sense

I think a lot of its is basically the lack of proper punishments and therefore people are on their own to deal with attacks by other people who don't fear prosecution for attacking people. Occasionally you hear of people who are decent people who would never commit crime but fear other people with knives and therefore carry a secret knife themselves perhaps hidden in their backpack. We are getting much poorer and some people are desperate for money especially if they have to feed an addiction. Luckily we don't have good access to guns but a knife is an easy weapon to carry. If you are a rich country you could try to tackle the problem with more police, more prisons but the same level of weak punishment but as a poorer country with reducing resources really the only option is harsher punishments.

BonzoBanana carrying a knife in a backpack won't protect you if you are suddenly attacked. To me that is carrying with intent, not for protection.

Lynibis It won't protect you in a surprise attack but in a confrontation situation which many thefts are it might. Obviously its a difficult situation but you can basically be knifed to death and the person doing it may get to walk out of prison in a few years especially if he has convinced the court that you were not an innocent party and a fight turned into a knife fight or something. I've heard of tradesmen who place a knife in a very easy to get to place and they are legally allowed to carry knives. They often suffer from tools stolen from their van etc and some of them have had such tools frequently stolen. Many do jobs for cash and as the saying goes 'cash is tax free' so they can have a lot of cash on them.

The frequency of violent confrontations at convenience stores is increasing so much. I've not been a witness to them but 3 times I went to a convenience store local to me and the store had shut because they had just had a violent incident. One was actually visited by the police as it had police tape all around the door. That was at a coop in a small village when I go to Burnham on Sea from Yeovil.

The way it is increasing at some point I may be in the convenience store when some low life attacks staff wanting the cigarettes which I think was one of the reasons my local Coop was closed one evening. I can understand the crime though cigarettes are so expensive so if you can take 50 packs of cigarettes that is probably £250 and easy to run with.

I think we will get to a point where people group up to deal with crime themselves as police continue to fail and have their resources cut back. Ultimately something has to happen when the state has completely failed. If criminals become too powerful then the police will likely be in league with them too as is the case in South America where the police have less resources than the criminals. We don't want to get to that point but we are heading towards it at full speed.
