Ask a Question

Should takeaways be banned near schools? 🍔📚

Research reveals that 27% of students said they wouldn’t bother getting a takeaway if it required walking more than eight minutes. 🚶‍♂️💡 What do you think?

So less than a third wouldn't walk , but over 2 thirds would, bit of a pointless research when the majority would walk , no they shouldn't be banned

I work in a secondary school. It is a 10 minute walk from the school to the high street. At least 50% of our pupils go to the takeaways or bakeries at lunchtime. Whilst takeaways aren't the healthiest, the lunchtime trade from the pupils is vital to them. Besides I know for a fact that a number of our senior pupils have had takeaways delivered to the school.

As MrsCraig said they will just get them delivered to them at school if that desperate for a takeaway.

Jerseydrew Takeaways often have a 'won't deliver to schools' rule

More nanny state, surely people included secondary school children should be able to make their own decisions as to what they eat. Does anyone honestly believe banning takeaways near schools will make a difference, they will head to the local convenience store or garage and pick up junk food there if that's what they want.

Just educate them about healthy eating. They will be been exposed to junk food all their lives so they just need to learn about making choices, rather than hiding them from them

Seems incredibly unfair to ban a takeaway from operating which is their source of income. I'm amazed kids have enough money to buy takeaways on a regular basis. When I was a kid I think I got from 50p to £1.50 a week and probably a portion of chips on their own was a good percentage of a pound, maybe 70p back then. I was a comic addict so spent my money on comics generally.

BonzoBanana...My 5 siblings & I got 2p each day at Junior & Infants School & when we moved to Secondary School it went up to 10p a day..

Bus Fares were 2p & when we went to Confession on a Saturday we walked the 3 mile round trip some of it taking in the woods so we could spend the extra 4p on sweets, we did exactly the same on Sundays for Mass & spent the extra 4p!

janphoenix51 Different times, nowadays I see kids with designers trainers and phones that I can't afford (well don't want to spend money on really).

Absolutely not!….yet another stupid and ridiculous idea.

It helps local businesses to keep going and it means kids will at least be able to eat something.

Queues for school lunches are beyond a joke, and the choice and quality of food in schools is diabolical. So most times kids don’t eat at school, because there’s nothing they want.

Children are fat enough already and have more money than exercise. Let them suffer as they get older. They deserve it.

You mean chicken/pizza shops? That's food which if consumed too much is very unhealthy.

Once or twice a month? Okay. Every day or weekly? Don't do that to yourself.

But regardless, banning won't solve anything. Let the parents do their job as parents.

PhilipMarc Let the parents do their job as parents is such a hopeful and idealistic comment that doesn't really sound like the comment you would make normally. Clearly parenting skills are lacking in a huge number of parents. It is what it is though, you can't force people out of business because some parents are idiots or lazy or school canteens are failing.

I took sandwiches to school a lot many years ago and I often made them myself as my mother was working. The canteen was often heaving with people with lots of long queues and it just got really annoying but did use it a fair bit (mainly when I didn't have time to do sandwiches). The canteen was good value though but I don't remember it being much better value than making your own sandwiches. I'd always go to the canteen for the Christmas meal though, which I think was free if I remember rightly.

These days they all have phones and can get delivered to where they are. Also if the shop / eatery is there rather than bored up like some areas.

No because if you don't like the school canteen food then you can always go to the nearest takeaways for their healthier options

Paulyousef28 Takeaways don't sound very healthy either unless they're salads or sandwiches.

Yes of course they should be banned near schools. You see the kids come out and head straight to the McDonalds and KFC's or other brands.

Our local councillors tried to stop a new McD's open directly opposite a secondary school on the grounds of health but the council passed it anyway. Next door to it is a KFC as well. About half a mile away is a second McD's in the shopping centre. There are so many unhealthy kids around living off this kind of processed fast foods it is so sad.

How far away would we allow a takeaway to be exactly? In my area alone there must be 5-6 schools that I'm aware of

There’s often an ice cream van waiting outside one of our local schools, they obviously do a good business.

No. Few reasons they will get it delivered. Schools are in villages etc where people live and these businesses need the support of locals to survive.

Every now and then there is always talk about how we can combat obesity in children, sugar tax and now this. Why don't we try educating them about nutrition? Instead of just taking away all temptation.
