Should Books Have Age Rating
Ask a Question
I've often thought they should but today I got a roblox book for my 8 year old which he had asked for. Obviously I'm now after a refund
I know you can sometimes get age on difficulty but I think also contents
That's awful, I bet some parents don't check it either so don't realise as I wouldn't think too. Surely those who make these books should think about their target audience.
Normally I wouldn't check all the way through as can take a long time to read a book but this one looked sad on first glance
Imnotcheap I'm quite wary of Roblox although my son loves it I've heard about alot of issues regarding children's safety online. But I wouldn't think to check a book, you are right something needs to change and they need to be accountable for what they are producing.
Yeah I do think they should have a age rating they have it for most things so why not books
I remember my mum let me buy IT by Stephen king at 10 because she didn't read that sort of thing. I'm soooooo glad I only finished it late teens. Luckily it was bit too difficult
Imnotcheap my niece wanted that one call black phone lucky I've seen the film so told my sister not to get it she's 10 too
FYI in book there is a group erm.. adult scene with all the children. The girl knows to do this after her dad tried to "check " she was still innocent earlier in the week. Its nothing like the new films really.
Obviously by what you have purchased then the answer is yes. Never thought of this before just assumed kids books were for kids.
When I look for books for my son I always look for the recommended age range. Books do have an age rating to an extent as they will go by what age range they are suitable for. I think when it comes to certain books, like ones to do with Roblox, Fortnite etc then there should definitely a warning on them about explicit language, that way you know if it is suitable or not.
Imnotcheap yes but a book that has an ability of age 8 would have suitable content for that age so wouldn't have explicit language
MrsCraig yes they should but having read some book reviews sadly not always the case
I’ve never thought about this before but you’re right. It is strange that all other media has some form of age rating or parental warning but books don’t.
You are the best judge of what is suitable for your child,if you suspect it's too old for them at their stage of development then don't buy. Age is no indication, I was reading adult science fiction when I was 9-10 as I'd read all the children/young adult stuff by then, hence my comment on age.
If it's associated with something popular with youngsters, have a skim through it. If it's only bad language then I'm reasonably sure they hear it at school and amongst their peer group.
Claret1 I live in a small town so mostly buy things online and thicker books hard to look through. I'm also concerned with adult themes
I appreciate it can be difficult to actually hold the book to look through it, but there has to be plenty of reviews etc. available online. Amazon certainly have pretty thorough information on any publications they sell.
That’s ridiculous, I know Roblox is a big thing in lot of kids lives these days but there’s no need for bad language. I got a magazine for my wee granddaughter bout year ago. It was full of all wee cartoons younger kids watch (5 and under) but when looking through it before she arrived there was a 2 page spread of how to put on makeup, not just the sweet lipstick that came with it but actual eye makeup and mascara. Thought it was bit much for under 5s and she didn’t get the magazine plus her dad would have went mad if he’d seen it
Imnotcheap my son in law would have had plenty to say if I’d have given it to my granddaughter. She loves books and goes straight to magazines if I take her to the shop. I’m just glad I’d bought the magazine when she wasn’t with me and I’d chance to check it 1st. Showed it to my daughter and she couldn’t believe it as mag was for girls 5 and under
Oh, god no.
The certificates on games and movies/shows kinda ruin a cover so wouldn't want them on books now.
ESRB, PEGI, CERO, and BBFC are alright, but who in their right mind thought USK (Germany) was a good idea!
They even moved the MGS logo to the right due to the stinking rating.
Imnotcheap ESRB/PEGI are as it is.
USK is just horrible to look at. The Australian certificate is similar to USK so far from ideal, too.
I dont think age ratings as such are a good idea but a discrete information box warning for any content which might be an issue would be useful. Then parents can decide for themselves if its suitable for their children.
When I saw your title my immediate thought was 'No' but I had no idea filth like that was in kids books these days! Maybe they should put, 'not suitable for under 15s' or something.
