If You Could Bring 1 New Law into Effect, What Would It Be?

Ask a Question

If you could choose to add 1 new law to the UK, what would it be and why?

I think I would add a law to make a 4 day working week because I think it would improve the quality of life for so many of us.

Decreasing the prices of healthy foods especially organic fruits and vegetables.

I agree with this definitely! It is unfortunately so much easier to be able to buy a quick cheap snack that is unhealthy and all the healthy food even seems to be reduced slower than the rest.

SaverDeals Growing fruits and vegetable is cheaper but taking care of farm animals and feeding them is much more expensive and you require a lot of land.

How would you feel about working one extra hour a day, and having an extra afternoon off every week instead?

Yes I would absolutely be up for that, but I think I'd rather do two more hours each day to have the Friday or Monday off! Although this would be a good half way.

I would enforce stronger penalties for animal cruelty..

my partner and i bought a kitten for his mum from a couple that lived locally to us (we didnt personally know them but knew of them in the area through other people). The couple had the mother cat, the sister of the mother and the father cat and they were all house cats. About 2 months later, the mother and the pregnant sister of the mother were found 5 minutes down the road, abandoned in a sealed cardboard box in the woods, overnight in the winter in Scotland. I immediately contacted the SSPCA, we met the cats and confirmed they belonged to this couple. The SSPCA were unable to do anything accept ban them for adopting animals from that shelter..

Absolutely appalling! They should definitely be punished further! I totally agree there should be a law for animal cruelty! I'm currently watching my wee dog asleep on the sofa and just can't think why anyone would abuse an animal!

I agree 100%. My mother phoned the RSPCA on many occasions on the next door neighbour. They had 2 dogs, really emaciated, hardly ever had any water or food down and there was faeces everywhere & they were left out 24/7 regardless of the weather. We used to feed them over the wall. Everytime we phoned they were more concerned about us setting up a monthly donation rather than listening to what we were saying and when they did pay them a visit nothing happened.

An immediate ban from office and no pension benefits if a person falsely claims expenses. Yes I mean MPs and councillors.

Yes! I totally agree with you and would go a step further. They are thieves and should have a record which bans them from being employed in money sensitive jobs.

I would change the law regarding same sex couples and having children. My wife and I had AI and were married at the time so we were both able to go on the birth certificate. However the law is different for same sex couples that arent married, only the birth mother can go on the birth certificate. If they split up in the future the other parent has no rights over the child.

Can the other mother not adopt so they then have the parental rights as the birth mother?

GlitchHunter after the child is born they can apply for parental responsibility but their name doesnt go on the birth certificate.

I think this is a really important thing that should be added. Both mothers should have equal rights and I had no idea that wasn't the case already.

KirsteyJames Their name shouldn't be on the birth certificate. They did not birth the child nor did they take part in making it. (Biologically) So I think the law is right. Both parents should have parental responsibility (under laws) which would give them rights to the child if they split up (?) but only one is the birth mother biologically and on paper, (birth certificate).

GlitchHunter my wife and myself (also a woman) are both on my daughters birth certificate as we were married at the time we went through artificial insemination. Theres straight couples who have ivf, use a donor sperm (ai) or donor eggs and dont have to be married yet both if their names go on the child birth certificate - the child is not biologically both of theirs so is the law right there?

KirsteyJames hmm you make a valid point. Haven't considered that. I Dont know enough about birth certificates. How comes it's one way for heterosexuals and another for gays?

GlitchHunter i dont know why its different thats why i would change it 🤣 at least we are allowed to get married now and not just have a civil partnership so we are getting there.

I left registration in 2011 so have no idea of recent law but father cannot go down if not married to mother unless he attends the registration, signing to say he is the father.

Things are very equal these days so I would be surprised if there is a discrepancy. The law is changing all the time but it takes time. My understanding is that no marriage means no second parent added, only birth mother, unless both attend. It is open to a lot of dishonesty as you could take anyone along and I have had several mums putting down a new boyfriend who lies and says he is dad even though they met only a few months previously.

Lynibis yeah i know both parents have to attend to their name on birth certificate unless the father is say in the army etc. What im saying is who is allowed to go on the birth certificate whether present when signing or not. My wife and I (both women) had our daughter via artificial insemination using donor sperm. The law at the moment states that if a same sex lesbian couple have a baby then both names can only go on the childs birth certificate if the couple are married when the child is conceived. This is the reason we waited until we were married as we both wanted to be on the birth certificate and have parental responsibility. If we had not been married then i would have no legal rights to our daughter unless i went to court to apply for parental responsibility. If a straight couple were to go through the same process and used donor sperm then they would both be allowed on the birth certificate whether they are married or not.

I have heard of a few lesbian couples having children and only the birth mother going on the birth certificate, then them splitting up further down the line and the birth mother refusing access to the child. The other mother doesnt have a leg to stand on to fight for access.

That mobile phones could only be used in silent mode in restaurants and on trains

I think that is definitely an annoying thing to have when people are just happy to go into restaurants and spend all the time on their phones, let alone when they're making ridiculous amounts of noise.

The current UK law really needs a reform because seriously, arrest people for "meanie" Twitter posts while actual assailants are out there committing crimes? That makes absolutely no sense.

It's no secret that the UK sells arms/weapons to other countries so they should offer a legal method of self-protection weapons for citizens who want to purchase a gun, like in US. Countless lives and businesses could have been saved if they weren't robbed of it.

But hey, don't actually expect to get 2nd Amendment in UK.
