Bring Back SAFETY ADVICE LESSON at School

In the News

When I was at school we regularly had safety lessons . Someone would come into the school and advise us about fire danger , bicycle safety , dangers on ice (frozen lakes or rivers) , the green cross code etc. However none of this is being done anymore for some reason, probably price cuts . These are life saving lessons that need teaching. What do you think

I think this is deffo worth it. I think they should set aside maybe a few days or maybe a week in the school year and have different people come in and talk to them about different dangers and what they could expect and do incase anything happened.

SarahfromLeeds unfortunately the reason I'm making this post is that 3 young children have died and one is still critically ill in hospital after falling through ice a few days ago . It's such a tragedy and I think this safety teaching needs to come back

petekid1952 you can tell kids, teach kids, but kids are kids some will always do what they want. Playing on ice is what we did and a lot worse back in 70’s and 80’s.

That's true. They should also do CPR lessons, too.

PhilipMarc very true I watched a program years ago and a young girl had performed CPR on someone until paramedics arrived saving a life because she had been taught first aid recently. Also a boy saved his baby sisters life after she got something stuck in her throat by performing the haemlic manouvere.

petekid1952 I learned on how to perform CPR and it's something you just don't forget and it's extremely useful! Just like driving.

On TV, they sometimes do it wrong and no one should do as they see, but unfortunately some do. :-/

Swimming is very essential too and many (inc. myself) don't know so knowing could be beneficial for the person or to save someone.

How about parents teach their kids common sense, instead of putting basic things like you mentioned on to the schools..

Antiwoke I agree parents should teach kids safety etc but kids listen more to teacher at school etc in my view . It doesn't hurt to have extra lessons from school and parents

Talking of Fire safety anyone read this BBC news article www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-63956314 ?

Basically the consumer site "Which " have found that 85% of cheap xmas lights sold on Amazon and EBay fail UK fire safety standards 😮 . Anyone bought or liked any of the dozens of cheap chinese xmas lights posted on here every day ?

Maybe parents also need educating ?

Golfforall This is the same as most cheaper imported items and those being given at fun fairs as prizes or sold on markets etc.

Sadly a lot of children's toys don't mean the CE testing or regulations for the UK, they either don't have any logos on it or have fake ones. There were major issues when people were buying the hover boards a few years ago, the board themselves and the charging cables that came with them weren't safe. They did some testing and shared it on TV, it was quite scary how they all looked the same on first glance but were highly dangerous.

Some things really aren't worth risking.

Golfforall Oh just wanted to add in headphones too!

Yes they may look like the pricer brands and may sound decent enough, but do you know what damage they may be doing to your ears or child's ears? I didn't know the extend of damage until seeing the testing they go through and the outcomes.

If your child wants some fancy pricy headphones for Christmas, please make sure they are of good quality, UK standard, are genuine and safe. If you don't want to risk it and can't afford the official product you know is safe, then tell your children. No.

There is nothing wrong with not giving your children everything they ask for, it isn't something someone needs.

Golfforall I watched a short clip on the news when I was a kid and it showed how quickly a Christmas tree can go up with cheap lights. Also it had a section on how cheap clothing wasn't flame resistant. The nightdress went up in flames when they put the test dummy too close to the fire .

I agree, but sadly with the mental health crisis it may make some children worse.

I'm very paranoid about fires and burglaries and I'd hate for that to be put on to a child's plate too.

Yes, children should also be taught by their family, but we had assemblies where someone from the fire agencies and other services, came into school with the experience and burnt products to show and teach us. Visually seeing what can happen if you plug extension leads into other extension leads (which I see people doing all of the time 😬) could shock you into not doing it and making you aware.

General life skills from services, first aid, manners, kindness and mental wellbeing should all have a place in the education system in my opinion.

DeBunny It's unfortunate that kids and adults have to worry about burglaries and home invasions, but if they can get prepared for it then it could potentially save their lives.

I remember being taught road safety and what to do when you smell gas ect in school, I don't think they've completely stopped but focus on other things like internet safety now.

Midnightflower that's good because internet safety is huge issue and lots of parents aren't sure what's safe and what's not. But fire safety etc is equally important. I bet if we asked children what they would do if chip pan caught fire they would say "throw water on it" . Disaster waiting to happen

I didn't realize they had stopped these kind of lessons in schools . I agree it should be taught at school. Who cares how much money it costs , the cost of not teaching it is people's life. It's a no brainer in my opinion

Definitely worth bringing them lessons back like tufty the red squirrel that used to teach children about road safety

I don't recall getting any safety lessons at school. But, there has been a history of public information campaign films/adverts in the UK. For, example, the government's THINK! road safety campaign has been going for decades - www.think.gov.uk/about-think/story-of-think/

Public safety campaigns are still happening today. But, some of the ads from the 1960s to 1980s are more memorable.

ACR thanks for adding the links to the safety clips . They will be very useful to some parents or carers. Thank you for taking time to reply and share your opinions with us

It shouldn't cost money as I am sure lots of organisations would be willing to do a 30 minute chat for free. We used to have parenting lessons, shown how to bathe, feed, clothe, change nappies etc. If they did it now maybe less children would be in care!

Lynibis I totally agree, but I suppose that some areas would have volunteers willing to do these lessons and then other areas wouldn't so some kids would miss out. However it should still be an option. It's important
