There is seriously something wrong with this country
People are living in squalor , having to go to food banks and cannot afford to pay their bills and heat their homes
Yet commit a crime and you are housed in the most luxurious jail possible , better than some hotels
They even have a music classroom to help them get into the industry and classes on driving HGV vehicles to gain the licence needed
You try to get all that down at your local job centre , you will be lucky to be offered toilet cleaning or fruit picking
And they say crime doesn't pay
Think I might commit a crime so that I can treat myself to a nice holiday in prison. 
I can see why people would take this view, and completely get it. However this possibly saves money due to keeping the prisoners occupied so they don't misbehave. It's not right but that's the world we live in.
You can see why so many are repeat offenders, they have the life of Riley whilst we are all suffering and wondering how to pay the next bill 
I think some of them should get this opportunity if it's a petty crime but not for murders or for paedophilia they are the lowest of the low don't even give them a bed make them eat bread and water and look at 4 walls day in and out I know most won't agree to this because of human rights but all the victims had it taken from them!
I think there is a fine line here between rehabilitation and being too soft with prisoners
I have watched endless documentaries over the years on tv concerning prisoners and prisons both in the UK and elsewhere and it is not so cut and dry as people think
There are a hardcore section of inmates that will never change
Some think nothing of reoffending because they know they have a safety net back in prison where they are fed and watered and given free priority health care including dentistry that we have to pay for
Besides all the free training courses , we have to beg and also pay for
Many know how to work the system to their advantage and just because they are incarcerated doesn't mean they cannot carry on organising further crimes from inside
I see what is happening in the likes of nicaragua, and although it may seem cruel , the prisoners there are ruthless drug dealers and murderers and the punishment needs to fit the crime
I am sorry but there are too many do gooders in the UK that criminals use to their advantage , thats part of the reason why the criminal system is in such a mess
Remember the saying , ' Give them an inch and they will take a mile ' , pity it is not the green mile in some cases
telmel Well done for saying what so many of us think. It's totally unbelievable how this country has become we are a real walk over. It makes me so mad 
. All the military people who have risked their lifes for us given their all and some who are in real need of help are just kicked to the kerb. Then our elderly population can't afford to keep their homes warm. And as many have already said most of us struggling to keep our heads above water. Rehabilitation they play on that word !!!. Once a bad apple always a bad apple
If anyone thinks that jail is an easy job and they all have Sky TV and PlayStations, think again.
That's where were we need to put the ridiculous protesters in for a month, they won't do it again.
TheChimp ok it's might of not have been easy for you or someone you know but I can say honestly I know a few people who have been inside and they said it was alright only thing they found hard was they couldn't just go out that's just my opinion can't be that bad if most end up back inside

I've have 2 friends that went in who didn't take heroin and both of them came out addicts. One of them is dead and the other one has his own shooting up kit. How he's survived, I don't know.
I think that I might do some crime so that I can go on a f*cking holiday.
TheChimp I agree some people come out a lot worse off that's why I said my first comment this is a good idea for some people and believe me my cousin didn't worry how big he looked to me I kicked the crap out of him myself so dunno how he got away with a beating inside probably a grass I can't stand it I get you already guessed that
This really annoys me and would make less fortunate commit crime to go to jail for the luxury of it
I don't think prisons are a nice place to be but that is more because often wardens don't have full control as the rules don't have enough power on the violent prisoners who often dominate weaker prisoners. I'd personally separate violent offenders with financial crime offenders into different prisons and I'm all for reforming financial crime offenders but can't see much hope in doing so for violent offenders.
This country is living well beyond its means and prisoners should have to pay their way and if that means they have a ball and chain around their legs while they work out in the fields during the day so be it. The US makes billions from forced labour of prisoners and we need to do the same. It's great to be idealistic and say we shouldn't do that but moronic idealism has led to our huge debts which is a horrific burden now on this country.
I don't think I saw it mentioned on the news because news services are so utterly incompetent about the real issues but UK national debt is now greater than the yearly GDP of this country. That last happened over 60 years ago with the re-building costs after WW2. We are going to have to make tough choices in the years ahead and the more we delay this the harder those choices will need to be. As we become much poorer as a country it will create more criminals too so if we continue as we are there will be more and more debt if we finance the prison service the same way.
No wonder they want to repeat crime they should be harder on them not give them luxurious its a disgrace especially for murder and paedophile
There are so many schools and hospitals falling apart, yet we spend ridiculous amounts on prisons. The priority is all wrong.
Midnightflower My opinion also M, most older school ceilings are in danger of falling down and who knows if they contain asbestos, but lets give the criminals a brand new state of the art jail
telmel I'm not against rehabilitation but I dont think it should be a higher priority that education and health. They should be paying back society not costing us more money.
telmel Often the government goes for show projects, one project that looks good even if the rest of that sector is falling apart. We can't afford or need a high speed rail service but we are slowly getting one. What we need is low cost train travel so we can move goods and people around cheaply which would benefit the economy but instead we are being burdened with even more debts for this high speed rail service which will be added to the burden of consumers and businesses in this country and make their existence more difficult.

This is a catch 22 situation because some people have turned to crime as it was all they knew . They didn’t get the opportunities that we are all entitled to . So if being in prison and learning a trade or even just getting a few basic GCSE’s will help a persons confidence and ability to change and get a job etc then that’s a good thing . Some of the prison population have no education or prospects of being a successful member of society. This may be of real benefit to them . However there are also the career criminals who will just exploit the system, taking all they can with no effort to change and reform . It’s going to be hard to select the correct people who will benefit from this new prison system and I hope it does stop reoffending. With crime the way it is at the moment anything’s worth a try to reduce crime rates . I’m not sure if throwing this kind of money at the situation will help though. Maybe the money should be spent educating children at a young age the negative ways crime impacts our lives . Stop these people before they become criminals .
