Buckingham Palace Charging £75 to Visit the East Wing , is This Right ?

In the News

Do you think the palace should be charging for people to see the east wing , or any of the palace for that matter?

I think they forgot it is the British taxpayer that pays for its' upkeep

For us it should be free

Ok, charge the tourists who don't contribute , but i think this is a liberty

Royalty should be giving back to the people not charging them twice !!

I'd have zero interest in visiting it anyway personally so don't care but I certainly take your point in principle.

MelissaLee1 hahaha I remember a TV documentary about the royals and them being economical with security (but the public didn't even know any of this) and that Michael Fagan was a subject of this regarding royal security. I will be watching either Channel 4 or Channel 5 regarding BP charging "only" £75 to view their unique taste in furnishing.

I understand your point. I have been to many places here and abroad and noticed that locals can get free or discounted prices. This seems fair.

I wouldn't go if it was free, I have zero interest in the royal family, funny thing about this is, we the tax payers paid for that wing and pay to maintain it

martinlufc5637 Exactly what i am saying M , and where do they get £75 from ???

It shouldn't be more than £10 to £15 , if anything , Royalty don't need the money, the taxpayer already keeps them fed and watered , or they get an allowance , the rest is squirelled away in the bank or on property

And for £75 i would expect a buffet and bottle of champagne included

My respect for royalty died with the Queen i am afraid

Go to the US and you can tour the White House for free

They even do a virtual tour online

I think they even throw in President Biden to give a guided tour

Ehhh, i think i would give the last part a miss, you would never find your way out 😀

All White House tours are free of charge. The White House tour schedule is subject to change, with little notice, based on inclement weather or official use. If you are a citizen of a foreign country, please contact your embassy in Washington, D.C. for assistance in submitting a tour request

jms19 I believe the government pay for it's upkeep J , in other words we do

The Occupied Royal Palaces are held in trust for the nation by The King as Sovereign. Their maintenance and upkeep is one of the expenses met by the government in return for the surrender by the Sovereign of the hereditary revenues of the Crown (mainly the profit from The Crown Estate).Aug 8, 2023

This in comparison to Taylor Swift's concert tickets doesn't seem that steep. I'd never pay for either of them as I don't care about it.

But Swift's early music (Country) was actually really good.

I really think this is a liberty. He was left how much millions once his mother passed away, never had to pay inheritance tax, now wants to charge people. People pay to go there in the summer, now to see the east wing you'll be charged £75. It's bad enough he's charging for honey, dog bowl and I believe some sort of alcohol. But obviously the royalist will buy it. Would not be at all surprised if a scheme is not thought up to let people stay for bed and breakfast. As they say the more they have, the more they want. Personally it's just greed.

telmel No, no, no to the homeless living in BP. Can you imagine the drug takers, jobless, ex-convicts, etc lowering the standard of BP. The homeless would turn it into a third world country within a week.

jam45 I wasn't serious J, as it would never happen

But with its 775 rooms, including 19 State rooms, 52 Royal and guest bedrooms, 188 staff bedrooms, 92 offices and 78 bathrooms , it would make a good airbnb listing 😉

I think it's a rip off but then even if it were free I still would not be interested to go.

But just to let everyone know I have opened my house and for just £50 you can visit both the east and west wing I might also include the south wing and upstairs too on certain days. Now that's much better value for money

I have always said that British citizens should have free access to their own heritage, or a very reduced fee. However, it would be very difficult to implement as just one problem that comes to mind is what constitutes a British citizen, someone who has become one after living here for a few years, it's not their culture or heritage. Tourist? Yes, definitely.

Another thing I have always said: better to have more visitors paying less than just a few paying an extortionate amount.
