Should Budgeting Be Taught in Schools?

Ask a Question

Do you think kids should be taught more about money and budgeting in schools?

I wasn't really taught anything and had to learn it all myself and I think lessons in school/college would have really helped.

I personally think this would be a great thing to teach in schools. I really struggled when I moved out on my own. This would've really helped when I was in school.

Yes it should. Students should be taught how to balance their bank accounts as a key subject

Personally I think it would be easier to be taught by parents. Give children pocket money, teach them to save for something special but within reach.

Pjran I agree to a point as there's alot of children who don't get pocket money simply because there parents don't have it so I do believe they should be taught it in schools

Yes, it's important they understand how it works. I think children should leave school understanding interest rates, mortgages, bills etc. I had to learn by myself too.

They would have to teach the teacher’s first. More use than a lot of subjects but you would need to be careful not to imply that everyone should manage money in a set way.

Yes it should be taught in schools and reinforced by parents at home.

The idea that the world is your oyster and you can have everything and anything is a myth that people pay dearly for in the long run debt and financial hardship being at the top.

Disclaimer:Of course there are exceptions to this.

Money matters need to be taught now more than ever. With each generation it seems that money management seems to be less and less important.

I am always testing my kids to Increase there knowledge. Mainly stuff on money saving expert but I use different websites and apps to increase there knowledge as it's a disgrace they are not prepared for adulthood.

This should be taught by parents and schools. Bank representatives can be invited in to schools and offer talks on this (as some do on-line and in certain shopping centres where they have stands).

I vaguely remember my son giving some money/budgeting lesson in school. As a one off / day event. Not sure if it's in all schools.

Yes I do think it's a good idea also should teach taxes

I think budgeting should be taught in schools along with lots of other life skills. I think the curriculum is outdated.

Yes, indeed. To start from any where, any time -observe the general classroom's interest or create one to begin somewhere.

All children should be taught basic monthly budgeting, how to manage one’s money, savings and how the tax system works. They are essential skills along with how to cook and look after your home. Many children are not shown these things by the adults they live with because they may not have been taught them.

Yes most definitely. I work in education and a lot of what's taught is pointless unless you are going to be a scientist of mathemation

I think that's an excellent idea, being able to manage a budget, knowing what APR. really means in terms of paying back any credit, is an essential life skill.

I'm a teacher that works in the community and have been teaching budgeting for years. It should definitely be used in schools

Nearly 50 years ago I was taught about savings and interest, mortgages, how to write a cheque (those paper things we swapped to pay for stuff before online banking) and other stuff to do with money. Why did they ever stop teaching it?

I think these days they leave this to the parents to pass on, hopefully starting with how to save from your pocket money for things that cost more than you get. Sadly though, those days seem to be long gone. It's a shame, if parents were to explain to children why they can't have a particular item they want whilst out shopping i.e. they don't have that much spare after paying the bills, then they should learn a valuable lesson i.e. you can't necessarily have what you want but if you save up it you can buy it later (and hopefully value the item more) and perhaps later on the item won't be as desirable to them and they could then spend the money on something else instead anyway.

Especially the way things are at min and we r all struggling with our budgeting. Being good budgeters in the beginning would help us greatly now rather than going on trial and error and trying to get by now

Yes 💯i wish i had learnt. We used to have a class called citizenship. I thought a class like that would teach you all about being a citizen, I thought you would learn about taxes, your mortgages, renting jobs you name everything you need to know is an adult but it wasn’t. To be honest, I can’t even tell you what I thought cause I don’t remember so it wasn’t that helpful was it?
