Cats Killed on Roads

Ask a Question

Only yesterday on the next road to me there was a small smoky grey cat run over & left after the motorist drove off..A kind neighbour found the poor cat & took it to the Vets & posted a few details of the cat & location but no photo for obvious reasons.

On the Next Door app someone has replied that it was her elderly neighbour's cat & was deaf so wouldn't hear the car..

The owner of the cat & his wife are naturally distraught..

2 weeks ago our neighbours little cat Tilly was run over & killed, just discarded on the road early hours of the morning & found by Tilly's cat & dog owning neighbour..

Our roads are only supposed to be 20mph, they are residential roads on small estate in the north of Sheffield

I must have read about 7 cat deaths in Sheffield in last week, luckily kind people have took them to nearest vets & posted details so the owners know..

I actually stand in the road to slow drivers down when my cat is crossing the road but I'm not with him all the time, everyone I have encountered has been nice & understanding...

It's only a myth that a cat has nine lives!

It so sad my fur baby Theo my favourite was sadly run over, my neighbour said he ran because of a dog and car hit him and drove off!! Sadly he died without me being able to say goodbye .

LL81 ..So very sorry for your loss, poor Theo, drivers shouldn't just drive off,I asked my partner earlier if drivers are supposed to stop if they hit a cat & he told me now that the same rule applies as for a dog now.

janphoenix51 I’m shocked still that whoever did hit my handsome boy or has other cats have no morals / sympathy and respect to stop and get help.

It's really sad when a cat gets run over, especially for the owner. It's not law that you have to stop if you hit a cat on the road, I've just googled it. Personally I would stop, the cat may just be injured, so i would take to the nearest vet.

My ex copper, ex husband told me that drivers are not legally obliged to stop for a cat, but they must for a dog. Don't know if that is still true, or ever was.

Lynibis yes that is true. You don't legally have to stop if you hit a cat but you have to stop if you hit a dog.

Lynibis ...Unfortunately I have just googled it cats don't have the same rights as dogs who are classed as "Working animals "

There was a petition that reached 102 437 signatures but the government didn't pass it even though it had more than 100 000 signatures, our government say it would be too difficult to enforce..

There are lots of cats that live on our street. I drive slowly into our street in case there is a cat, child or dog. I've never hit an animal with my car and I hope I never do, but I would certainly stop if I did.

I will never forget a cat being run over in front of me as I waiting for the bus to college. She was a beautiful white persian. I held her in my arms and a lady who stopped took her to the vet but I never heard what happened to her. The only way to ensure this doesn't happen to your cats is to have 'indoor' cats. You can buy or make all sorts of things to stop them from getting bored, some even give them their own rooms with climbing shelves etc.

It's so sad, sorry for your loss to those who have lost fur babies this way, it seems there are more cases all over of this happening, my local groups have too been posting more and more, is it a case of more cats and more drivers or drives becoming careless to them

Yes it's sad, there's a main road behind where I live and cats are often run over there, usually someone takes them to the vets 😪

I would never allow mine to go out in case they were run over. I accidentally ran over my cousins having done that why slamming on the brakes to avoid and only clipping her. I have no idea how people say they didn't know they hit a cat

I STAND in our road if my cats are on the there pointing to them. it's only supposed to be 20 miles per hour..

Every driver I have encountered has smiled or understood why I'm like that
