Cheapest Big Supermarket excluding Lidl and Aldi.

Ask a Question

Excluding Aldi and Lidl. Who do you think are the cheapest supermarket overall, including branded products, offers and supermarket discount labels.

The reason I ask is the Mother-in-law insists it's Morrisons. I personally think it is Tesco (overall, but only if you use a Clubcard) I used to think it was Asda. But, their prices do not seem so cheap anymore.

Any views appreciated.

For me Tesco. Apart from some great offers, I absolutely love the Clubcard prices! Bought a few top up bits yesterday and saved around £6 on Clubcard prices.

Asda used to be cheap, but the last time I popped in found the prices had shot up.

Sometimes I pop into Iceland’s for a few bits in the freezer section and find they are reasonable.

We find Tesco probably the best at the moment thou it varies, month to month.

As others have said Asda have increased their prices considerably , we used to buy the Bakery Baguettes which were around 45p each, last week when we went to buy them they were now 80p each , yet they are still 3 for a £1 ( 50p each) in Tesco , just one example of Asda price increases .

I use Sainsburys occasionally and find their Aldi price match plus their other offers actually can make them a very good value shop as long as you avoid the full price items. I've always found Tesco the best value overall when just buying offers, reduced items and their value range stuff plus find the quality better especially fruit and veg. I am the least loyal shopper I tend to have favourites in every supermarket so rotate where I shop to stock up on the best value items in each store. The fact I have a Aldi only about 1/2 mile away makes them convenient and there are probably 10-20 items I regularly buy there. Some of the fruit and veg is poor quality sometimes and I'm not keen on some of their processed food plus I'm not keen to fully support Aldi either because of the damage it causes to our economy so try to be selective with only the good value stuff there. If its the same price elsewhere I will buy elsewhere and there is probably about 20-30% of stuff in Aldi that is a better price elsewhere. Sainsburys often have usable vouchers as well as Aldi price match items so can be significantly cheaper too.

Hey perhaps you could play a game with your mother-in-law using our price comparison tool?

e.g.

  • Which supermarket is cheapest for 4-pinks semi-skimmed milk?

The tool would then tell you

I agree. Really don't like Lidl. Very limited range.
