What's the Most Shockingly Expensive Item You've Bought for Your Kids?

Ask a Question

For those of you who are parents, what item for your children turned out to cost more than you anticipated? For me its shoes!! Decent kids shoes are so expensive and they grow so rapid!! I try and use clarks outlet for my little one but they dont always have the sizes.

I definitely agree with shoes, much more expensive that I thought, I can get my shoes cheaper than his. I always buy his shoes in the sales and buy his clothes either second hand or in the sales. Kids toys can be ridiculously expensive too.

MrsCraig I think the toys one gets worse as they age.. when they are young they are happy with anything! But they go to school and want what their peers have and then it gets pricey!!

HannahSunderlan our son is into anything Cars and Monster Trucks and some of the playsets cost a fortune! Luckily he isn't really one of those kids that wants what others have.

MelissaLee1 Is the Lego for you or the child though? 😂 My little one is young enough to not be bothered by lego atm, we have a couple of the Duplo sets that she got for her birthday/christmas but she's more into dolls and playing in her pretend kitchen 🙂

HannahSunderlan No children. My husband was older and step children are as old as me! I have just noticed the extortionate price of lego over the years.I had stickle bricks and fuzzy felt.I always played make believe games when i was young and had talent shows in the garden lol. I enjoyed board games which were not inordinately expensive then and collected pop posters and things.I do recall my wendy house in the garden and throwing water all over the place!Still do it today lol.

Shoes are most definitely the most expensive item.It is sometimes difficult to buy in advance as the children's feet can grow in the summer holidays and there is no point buying until they go back in September when there is a shortage of sizes .So problems all round with shoes.

When it comes to gaming, PC gaming seems so much better value than console gaming. You don't have to subscribe to play online games and that can save a huge yearly amount plus the games are generally cheaper. You can configure a small gaming PC for around 300 pounds although the more you spend the more powerful it is. You can play customised versions of your favourite games on PCs that can make your favourite games new experiences. So you can save huge money going the PC route for gaming.

Another cheap option is secondhand bicycles. Many people sell their old children's bicycles very cheaply and they tend to be simple bikes which are easier to service compared to adult bikes so not too difficult to adjust and keep running well.

I think basically everything- manufacturers and retailers know that parents want the best for their kids. Then as the kids get older peers pressure hits and as a parent you get stuck. Specially if little Harold next door has one and the adverts are on every 15 minutes.

Luckily our daughter was always happy with what she got for Christmas & Birthday, we didn't go overboard on spending & she always appreciated everything we gave her...
