Cliff Erosion Leaves Beautiful Cottage close to toppling over the edge

In the News

This cottage in Devon is now only 40 feet from toppling over the cliff edge after a large chunk of the cliff had fallen off

Not only this but it is a danger for those using the beach below

I should imagine the price of this cottage was very expensive at one time, but it will be virtually worthless now

And i doubt the owner has it insured as no company would touch it

It is such a shame as the cottage looks beautiful

There are loads of beautiful homes at risk of landslides. I remember reading an article of one woman losing her home and she bought another at risk! Obviously needs her head examined.

Pjran I don't know how anyone could buy a property that is in danger of falling off a cliff P ?

Unless they were cash buyers , no bank or building society would give them a loan and insurance would be the same

It must be heart wrenching though to have invested everything you have in a property to see it slowly edging towards a precipice

telmel I found the news report. A grandmother who already saw one clifftop home fall into the sea due to coastal erosion now faces losing another to the same thing.

She was forced to leave her three-bedroom property in December 2013 after a third of it toppled onto the beach below. She moved into a caravan and then a semi-detached home further inland at Happisburgh, Norfolk, in 2017.

Pjran Wow , that is terrible bad luck P, imagine losing two homes, one is bad enough, poor woman

Do you have a link to the story ?

Pjran Many thanks for that P, i will have a read of it

Update That is so sad , and it is not only her house, the lighthouse, church and the pub is in danger also

If the erosion carries on, as it will , the size of Great Britain will be drastically reduced in the next few hundred years or so if something is not done

A huge amount of homes will be lost to the sea over the next 50 years due to rising sea levels. A small but significant portion of the UK coastline is vulnerable including places like Burnham on Sea and Weston Super Mare close to me which will likely disappear. If you scroll the map on this page look at the Netherlands, that is seriously going to lose a lot of their current land. Lots of people have property that will become worthless over time as it will just disappear. It will effect 10s of thousands of homes in the UK and possibly millions over the whole of Europe and all in a relatively short amount of time.

telmel Yeah its so weird the coast may get as close as about 5-10 miles from Yeovil where I live and Taunton could become a seaside resort except I imagine it will be a muddy mess for a few years as the sea takes over the land. There will likely be some new islands too. I doubt I will be alive to see it happen but you never know, it depends on how long I get and if the sea level rises as expected. In fact recent news said the rise in sea levels was accelerating. We haven't really made any effort to slow down global warming. The main thing to do is reduce the birth rate but over in Asia and Africa they are still knocking them out at an alarming rate.

Never understood why people want to build on a cliff edge but then there's sink holes at ground level as well I guess. Life is uncertain at best. Image

It’s a shame but it was inevitable. I’m sure the owners enjoyed gorgeous views

They could move the house just as they moved the Belle Tout Lighthouse on Beachy Head several years ago! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belle_Tout_Lighthouse

tumblespots The problem is the cost T

The lighthouse is costing £250,000 with a narrow base but extreme height.

So the house might cost a similar amount, they would need to purchase more land , build foundations, then all services would need reconnecting etc , so the cost might exceed the value of the house in the end

telmel I lived in Sussex when this lighthouse was moved and it was fascinating. Strangely enough though, by the time we left it was, once again, in a very precarious position! Plus, we always said we wouldn't want to stay in it - too close to the edge!

I can't imagine my house getting too effected by floods or rising water as I'm fairly high up. There are higher homes in Yeovil but the vast majority are much lower. I'd love to live by the sea but not actually in the sea. You wonder if floating cities or towns will be one of the ways humans cope with rising sea levels.

There's loads of properties at risk. Given the location they definitely won't get insurance. Sad though
