Should Companies Hire More over 50s?
Ask a Question
Should companies focus on hiring people over 50?
EasyJet has started recruiting over-50s for their cabin crew after research showed many in this age group want new challenges. However, three-quarters of over-50s feel their age might stop them from getting hired.
I think it’s a great initiative from easy jet. Technically employment law prohibits age discrimination, so in any case people should not be refused a job based on their age
Where I work we have quite a few people over 50 in fact a number of staff over 60 , the plus is they are reliable and have a good work ethic, the downside is they are prone to more illnesses than younger workers, and also often have family commitments such as grand children, which makes them less flexible when it comes to working extra days or overtime.
I don’t think they should focus on hiring 50+ year olds but at the same time anyone applying for the job should be given a fair crack regardless of age.
I can understand if the role involves a lot of training which costs money and you may not get many years out of the person before retirement that could be an issue and you are fitter when you are younger so firms that expect a high workrate may find older people slower. There are really so many variables.
BonzoBanana l concur with what you have said but past companies l have worked for take on young people, they train them up but then they find a company that pays better and leave.
Well I’m 52 and still working and need to work. I don’t have children so won’t have grandchildren. I can’t retire easily as I have huge gaps in contributions because of a long time out of work as I couldn’t get a job then when my role was redundant but I wasn’t given redundancy and couldn’t find a new position and ended up with stress and depression. So I will still need to earn a living for a while yet. Hiring shouldn’t be solely on age. It should be the best person for the job regardless. It really depends on the person and the employer.
Depends on the company and what the job requires. But surely during the hiring process, the managers can work out whether someone is suitable for the job, regardless of age?
Think everybody else should follow.
You only stop living when you drop dead so why not and you should
MelissaLee1 you’re right it’s 68 for me it’s all wrong as body will want to retire before then.
Definitely encourage employing older staff, everyone should be given the same chance.
Depends on the job. I wouldn't want to work for say easyjet just because you're in a room trapped with people. No thanks
