Cost of Kings Guards' Real Fur Bearskin Caps is £2,000!
In the News
Can you believe it? I had no idea they were made from real bearskin especially when wearing animal fur these days is considered anathema to most.
Why are they not made from faux fur? If they were imagine the savings that could be made by the MOD. It may not seem much overall but there is a saying ' look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves'
The link would not post but this was from online bbc news
Some people still wear real fur I remember many years ago my mother got a sheep skin coat I hated it firstly because it was real skin and I looked like del boy lol I did inherit a fur coat from my mother and she would kill me for this but it went to the charity shop there was no way I was keeping it
Leannexxx I don't know how many soldiers are issued with these but imagine how much money would be saved of they were fake and were say, £200. Apparently they are costing more as there are less bears to kill which I find abhorrent.
I must admit sheep skin costs were all the rage when I was young.
I don't think royalty are too bothered about this, they enjoy shooting grouse and other game birds as a sport which in itself unacceptable
Here is an alternative link L to the story, BBC and yahoo links never work

Thanks for the link Tel. I don't think the Royals insist on this, it is MOD budget I assume. Taahe two points I am cross about is the killing of bears, sometimes cruelly, and the cost which could be spent sensibly elsewhere if they used faux fur.
I haven't usually got much time for PETA as they come out with stupid stuff like horses shouldn't be ridden and you shouldn't walk your dog without it's permission! Have any of them got a dog, they usually go nuts if you reach for their lead.
Lynibis That's true L, but i am sure if King Charles wanted them banned they would be , they are the Kings Guards after all , but i doubt he even realises there is any controversy over them
I did find this on google that tries to justify the use of the skin
The MoD, which is responsible for the uniforms of the British Army, maintains that real bearskin is the most suitable material for the guards' caps. They argue that current synthetic alternatives don't meet the same criteria for waterproofing and appearance
I think they pick and choose what suits L , and it is surprising as he is patron of the RSPCA
Its a good job nobody has brought up his past sporting activities , oops i just have
Charles broke a rib while riding with the Wynnstay in 1998, when fox hunting was still legal, and rode with Daresbury and his family during a hunt in 2003 when the debate about banning the blood sport was at its height
Talk about a conflict of interest
It's like giving Putin the personality of the year award
Some people have even stronger opinions about it all

I think the situation is unacceptable due to cruelty and cost. I knew that it was bear fur before but certainly did not know how expensive they are. A cheaper alternative has to be found even if not quite as nice visually.
I stayed at Windsor very near the barracks and saw the change over of guards. The second day it was very wet and they didn’t have their bear hats on! Can’t remember what they had instead so they can’t be that waterproof!
Wasteful on tax payers money and it's cruel to the bears. It's disgusting thst they still use actual bear skins.
Never knew these hats were made of Real Fur, in this day and age you would have thought they would have moved to a fake fur alternative many years ago.
