What was this couples crime that cost them £400 , being good citizens and disposing of an envelope in a bin , but the wrong one
I cannot believe this, i did not even know you cannot dispose of an envelope from your home in a public bin, only your own !!
What a complete farce , if the public are not getting fleeced by traffic fines they are getting fleeced by the council snoopers
As the couple pointed out there are people fly tipping and littering everywhere and getting away with it
They do what they thought was the right thing and get this

Ridiculous. Yes we need to recycle but at least it went in the bin. If yhet fined them why not a tenner? I guess as councils are bankrupt they need to make money somehow
Jerseydrew I think that is probably part of the reason J , its just a shame they do it to responsible people and not the real criminals
This is money scamming off of the public gone mad. I've heard of unscrupulous goings on concerning car parking etc but this is a new one on me. I would personally tell them to go forth and multiply, take me to court and I will bring the press. Idiots! Greedy ones at that!

I would have had my day in court, this world is sending me crazy and finding no joy with the sickness we are bringing upon ourselves.
That is a farce, i wasn’t aware of that rule either. Councils and the police etc seem to be spending a lot of time focusing on stupid things, rather than actual problems.
That’s absolutely ridiculous to be fined all because she put an envelope in the bin on the way to work! I wonder how much the fine would have been if she just littered.
Things are bad enough as it is and they give people another reason to hate them? They'll blame the "far right" got to them.

Hopefully they'll vote for the Reform Party and yes, I know they're far from perfect, but still better than Tory/Labor. If Farage was the next PM that would be god damn glorious.
Gone are the days of the post being delivered before you set off for work...ie opening and reading your post while walking to the bus stop or train station as l use to do this and screw or throw the envelope in the bin. Such a weird world we live in now

So any public rubbish bin cannot be used to put anything from the home in it ??
I would deliberately start putting my used envelopes in them, minus my name and address of course, but knowing the council snoopers they would go to the expense of DNA testing to catch you 
telmel oh crumbs I'm bang to rights then as I'm always putting my chewing gum in a wrapper in the bin...I'm going to be poor in no time 
Wow all you have to do is put someone's address you don't like on a envelope and stick it in a public bin for them to get a huge fine or just look through their rubbish and get an old envelope and stick it in a public bin. Just seems madness, basically you can put as much of your own home rubbish into public bins as long as there is no details about you with it.
My general waste bin collection is every 3 weeks and on average its only a third full at best but there is only me at this house. However I've seen public bins in a nearby small park close to my home full of home waste presumably because they didn't have enough space in their normal bins for one collection every 3 weeks and likely a family with multiple kids etc. So I'm guessing there is a problem with people leaving home waste in public bins as they have built up too much waste at their home.
Yes its only an envelope but I guess the council are assuming a lot more of their unidentified waste was also thrown out with it by the same people.
It's getting more and more difficult to dispose of waste nowadays. My council are grossly incompetent with huge debts and have just announced redundancies for 1000s of staff due to their huge debts. It's likely public bins will start getting removed at some point as they won't have the resources to empty them.
BonzoBanana I was also thinking of what you said about someone putting your address on an envelpope and putting in a public bin out of spite B , it could possibly happen
Yes, i think public bins will go the same way as public toilets have, both a necessity but unaffordable to councils
The way cutbacks are going we will be getting zero services eventually with sky high costs
telmel Yes that is what debt does, you end up paying all your money on servicing the debt rather than providing services. Councils should never have borrowed, if they can't afford a service they can't afford it, it only delays problems and makes them much larger. It's madness the way the country is run. If they never borrowed and never sold assets we would have faced a financial crisis probably in the late 70s or early 80s and would have withdrawn from the EU much earlier. I see now the Royal Mail is now being sold to an oversea investor from the Czech Republic. It's utter madness and shows the utter stupidity and incompetence of our current government.
Unfortunately that's the way this country has gone , everyone looking to fine people for anything and everything.

So i will continue to post these types of injustices , making people aware of the pitfalls we face daily
Seems crazy! I don't understand that. Where I live people dump rubbish everywhere. In back lanes. Even on the local field. I know one person that's doing it all the time I keep hoping she gets found out and gets fined but doesn't seem to happen.

It's absolutely shocking around here where people are putting their crap in council bins so they are overflowing after a day of being emptied.
This is not a money making exercise, but trying to stop people from what is basically fly tipping.

What is this country coming to? Why can’t they go after proper criminals rather than couple who thought they were disposing of an envelope in an entirely legal way. They probably wouldn’t have been fined as much if they’d just dropped it on the ground. How many of us are guilty of this? I know I am in the past, taking post from postman on way to work and then throwing any post that’s irrelevant in the nearest bin on way to work
I saw this and it confirmed to me that councils are desperate to recover money that has been taken away by the government and they need to replace it. Absolutely disgusting and the council even tried to think it.
Some people like using a public bin rather than their own bin to get rid of rubbish from their houses on a regular basis
