Is it time to say goodbye to 1p and 2p coins?
Treasury officials haven’t ordered any new ones to be minted, and reports suggest they won’t be ordering more in the coming years.
I can see some things and phrases disappearing if they stop making them, for example
Penny for your thoughts, i need to spend a penny, a penny saved is a penny earned, don't be penny wise and pound foolish, bad penny, worth every penny, a bad penny always turns up, penny pincher, cost a pretty penny , in for a penny, in for a pound, the penny drops, to name a few
Well they can be fiddly. I do find the .99 price annoying. Just make the price a whole £1 as that’s what it is really. I quite like the 2p falls machine in the arcade though so I’d miss that. The prices these days though are so high in general there’s not much need for them any more.
JLouM ....Totally agree with you there, try to get rid of them at every opportunity as does our daughter.
I hate counting them when doing Finances at work after taking service users shopping too..
SamGoodship no idea, possibly, too many in a bag, too small it's the coin that angers me the most with no real reason.
Problem is that traders round prices up and seldom down so everything gets yet more expensive.I recall the old adage Look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves.
I cant remember the last time I actually spent a copper coin? Why do we need them any more? They should be allowed to die out naturally by keeping them legal tender for now but not producing any new ones at all. Most people probably wouldnt even notice
Change goes straight into a jar, I hate having coins in my pockets, small change is no longer needed
martinlufc5637 I rarely have any small change anymore to be fair. I mostly use my card but the few places I had to use cash it's usually in pounds/
I suppose it's multi purpose and allows you to make up any monetary denomination , but in it's own right of little use anymore, apart from in my local petrol station that always insists on the odd penny you go over on the pump.
When they tried to do this before, one of the reasons they stayed was because charities said they would lose out (even though there’s card payments) because people will often put the 1ps in the charity tins at the till
No - i put all mine in a big jar and they get dished out to the grandkids when they go on holiday
I don’t know, it all depends on how they deal with things that cost and require change less than a 5p. I don’t mind if i get more change back but i wouldn’t be happy to lose money everytime i want to pay cash
