Does Your Dairy Milk Seem to Be Going off Quicker than It Used To?

Ask a Question

Recently our milk seems to be going off much faster. We haven’t changed the rate we drink and get through a lot of it. There are 2 of us and we buy x2 4 pint cartons. We get halfway now and it’s ‘off’. Never used to. Wondering if our fridge has had it and needs replacing but all other food seems cold and still good, no nasties. Not sure what to do.

Mine does I get the cartons from Aldi and Tesco both gone off within 2 days so I put my fridge up a bit and been fine for that last couple I've got

Leannexxx One of our fridge buttons is jammed so can’t adjust it. It’s had a few leaks but usually just debris in drainage needs clearing. I have since realised we have had this appliance 12 years now so maybe it’s due for a replacement. It’s annoying though as it takes time to choose, buy, install etc and dispose of the old one somehow.

JLouM well if you have had that one 12 years I'd go for the same brand and you can ask your council to remove it but not sure how much they will charge you

Leannexxx Yes I’ll have to find out. Not sure can get same brand. Got this one in a shop showroom when Dixons were still around. It’s all different now.

I would definitely check your fridge first. Are you storing the milk in the fridge or in the door itself.? Check your rubber seals. Or change to Cravendale milk.

eyeballkerry That’s a good idea. It’s in the door, not best place but only fits there. I haven’t checked seals yet. Cravendale is a good idea. Thank you.

supermarkets are fine but if I buy it from the corner shops it's either already off or goes off the next day

I read that as dairy milk as in the chocolate 🍫. I find milk goes off quicker in the summer. But check your fridge

Our milk lasts for ages. Never had any issues with milk going off. Our milk lasts for at least a week in the fridge.

Funny enough i've had a bottle turn a couple of weeks ago, I normally like to buy filtered as it lasts longer.

I buy the 2 litres for a pound at farmfoods and always choose the longest date there. I get a good 2 weeks out of it. I have the fridge set pretty cold though. Remember the higher the number you select the colder the fridge and the more power is used. I feel this is easily offset by less food wastage though.

No.

I usually buy the long lasting one instead, but may buy the 4 pint for the church (donated two heavy bags of food).

Be very careful that it is not leaking gas J

I found a few warnings online i will post here , it might be worth getting it checked out

If you have noticed a strange smell it could be leaking hence it would not be freezing properly and given the age it makes it more likely

I would hate to see anyone harmed because of this , a technician can tell you if it is leaking , or it might be cheaper to just replace it

A technician can detect a refrigerant leak by using ultraviolet (UV) dye. An HVAC technician will send a fluorescent dye through your system to find the source of the leak. Once it circulates throughout your HVAC system, a detection lamp is used to find the leak's exact location

A leaky air conditioner or refrigerator can cause acute freon poisoning.

Is a fridge leak smell dangerous?

If the odour smells like strong chemicals or gas, then your fridge freezer could be leaking refrigerant. Inhaling this can be very dangerous! If it's safe to do so, turn the unit off. Then, get out of your house and call a technician as soon as you can.

telmel Thank you for concern. It does just seem to be milk and nothing else. Our freezer must be ok as still making ice cubes with no problem. I haven’t noticed any unusual or chemical smells and I have an acute sense of smell so I would know. It is an old appliance though so not end of world if we do need to replace but still a last resort with the cost of everything these days. Will keep 👀 eyes and noses 👃 on it!

JLouM No probs J, things like fridge freezers and microwaves we tend to just carry on using and not think they can leak after time , i am glad yours seems to be ok
