Don't You Wish People Would Return Things They Borrow.

I am forever lending people stuff; books, dvd's, jigsaws etc. But do i get them back? Very rarely.
Saw my surgery nurse this week and blood pressure was a little high. I mentioned I had a machine so she asked me to use it am and pm for a week and go back next week with results. Do you think i can find it? No. Then it occurred to me that I had lent it to someone months ago but cannot for the life of me remember who. I always mean to write down who has what but when they leave I get involved in other things and forget.
I feel I shouldn't have to ask, why can't they just return when used? It is not a cheap piece of kit.
We have learnt over the years not to lend stuff out anymore. It’s not that it doesn’t get returned but generally comes back broken.
eyeballkerry yes that's another problem. I don't think that has happened to me but I think I will keep schtum from now on and not offer things.
Lynibis You don’t get your stuff back so they could be broken. My daughter borrowed a tent from me, it got torn but she did get it repaired without telling me. I found out about a year later.
I learnt a long time ago don't lend things to people you never get them back sadly or it comes back broken
Jerseydrew seems I am not the only one with this problem. It is sad that so many have no respect for other's property.
This is a pet peeve of mine, I have actually stopped lending things now. A family member borrowed some board games years ago (I’m a big board game fan) and I’ve not seen them since
I try not to lend things unless I really have to, the last thing I lent to a friend was my garden vac, only been used a few times, and yes eventually I had to ask for it back to be told that it was no good as the bag had been ripped! No offer of a replacement either, to say I was annoyed is an understatement.
I stopped lending items out years ago or doing favours for anyone, they never returned anything so I had to chase them for them, and favours where never returned either
Lack of respect is the answer if they thought highly enough of the person they borrowed something from it would be returned straight away. Without respect it becomes another job on their 'to do' list and the item gets returned eventually if at all.
If anyone lends me, my partner our our daughter anything we always make sure we look after it, give it back as soon as we can & in the same condition as we got it..
If that's not possible we would buy a new one for the person , after all they were good enough to trust us with their property in the first place..
We have lent our friendly Asian next door neighbours everything from our gardening tools to my partner who fixed their front door..
Our neighbours have always looked after & treated our property with respect & have always brought beautiful home cooked food for us as a thank you..
Must admit I have a wall steamer I keep meaning to return to a relative. It's in a bag in car just keep forgetting. In my defence they have said no rush.
Anything electrical we lend out my husband will offer (I insist) he takes it and demonstrates. I once lent my friend a power washer but after a couple of days she rang saying it doesn’t work! It certainly did and my husband thinks she turned the water off and the engine burned out.
I will only lead certain things to certain people and only if I trust they will return it. Lent the neighbour the car battery charger the other day, had it back within a few hours. It is very rare that I lend something to anyone. My mother in law is still waiting to get an expensive dish back from someone. She has been waiting 3 years, told her she is never seeing it again.
MrsCraig has she asked for it? I think I would be tempted to say 'oh btw have you still got that dish I lent you, I could have done with it the other day.'
My trouble is I forget who I lend things to!
My son and DIL visited yesterday and she suggested who may have my blood pressure machine and I think she is right, trouble is we are no longer speaking lol (I have written about my issues with her on here a couple of times and I finally ended it. Looks like i will have to buy a new machine).
Lynibis she has asked for it every time she has seen either her or her mother. Gets told "oh I thought I gave you that back already." Mother in law found out she gave it to someone else to use and never got it back from them so think it is lost forever.
Would it be worth phoning and asking if they have it? Or would that open up a can of worms?
MrsCraig personally I can't see how anyone can be offended by the owner asking for their property back. They should feel embarrassed! Care is needed though, in case the one who passed it on intimated that they could keep it as it is 'so long the owner can't possibly want it back' which of course isn't true. I have emailed the ex friend who I feel sure has my bp machine so we'll see what happens. I was very polite
I politely jog someone's memory then If not returned never lend to them again.More often than not these days I just give things away it's easier by far.
MelissaLee1 yes, that is inadvertently what I have done when I can't remember who I have lent to, a lot better than fretting about it so just write it off. However I did buy this for my own medical needs but I seem to recall this borrower had blood pressure issues so I suggested she had it for a while and then give back. But as I said to MrsCraig above, no chance of getting it back now.
Lynibis Ah well goes around comes around as they say.Just write it off and be more cautious in future I suppose.I believe there's a BP phone app.Not sure how good it is or quite how it works.
It's sad to see how many don't lend things because of this reason, I do personally help out if i can and yeah sometimes I have to remind them nothing wrong with doing that, sadly some people who borrow are careless.
wonderingsoul Yes, I think a good idea would be to say something when handing it over. Like, can i have it back next week as I will be using it myself, or, have promised to loan to a family member, or, how long will you need it,
Yes, for example, I borrowed a Bible from the church I go to, but it'll be returned when I finish. It wouldn't feel right to keep something that isn't mine.
However, I'll ask if I can buy or donate so I can keep it.
