Is It Too Early to Make Xmas Cake?

Ask a Question

I want to make my christmas cake, but is it too early?

This year has been absolutely crud and that's not including Covid, I'm just counting down until next year so I can draw a line with this thunder trap year

rls No, always had mine made by end of September to give it time to mature. I never 'fed' it after baking preferring to soak the fruit in the desired alcohol for 7 - 10 days before making, this way the fruit soaks up the alcohol and the cake is more moist.

hrdaniels1980 Do you grate a raw potato into it aswell? The recipe that has been handed down has this in, keeps it moist - apparently. I no longer make a cake as there is just me, my daughter now follows the recipe. One funny incident was when my son was 3 and helping make the cake by putting the fruit into the mixture and eating it at same time. I never give the alcohol a thought until he nearly fell of his little chair and his cheeks looked like tomatoes - whoops, he did sleep that night.

lilyflower I’ve never put grated potatoes in mine, always grated carrots instead. But will do a mini cake to try that idea thank you!

Oh dear I bet he did! 😂

This is an awful year, it isn't too early to make your Christmas cake. I have been trying to grasp any happy moment I can this year and if making a cake now will pick up your mood then you should do it

Not at all. If anything, now is a good time to start working on it as it will need a few months to fully mature. Good luck, and don't forget to give me a slice once it's ready. 😄 x

I'll send you a slice. Nobody likes it apart from me, but it is tradition to have it so I always have loads left over and it lasts me a few weeks.

I'm buying my fruit tomorrow and my house will smell of Christmas on Tuesday because I have the afternoon off. Housework will have to wait I have to make a cake, it's all about priorities😂

Not too early at all.

I usually make mine October half term, we have a Christmasy Day with the kids. House full of the smell of Christmas cake and a Christmas film with Christmas sweets 🎄

I’d get cracking if I was you as a Christmas cake needs time to mature. Go for it.

I think now is a perfect time to make your cake. I usually bake mine at the beginning of October. Anything to get us in the festive spirit this year is welcome!

My mum makes Christmas cakes for loads of people so she starts really early.. especially ones you are topping up with alcohol and leaving them to mature..

Making them early is a good idea. I might have a look for recipe and make one with my kids. I use to love making one when I was young the last one I was left alone for a couple of minutes with the scotch and put half the bottle on the cake 🤣 I would have to make mine without as would be sharing with 4 and 6 year olds

We are making Christmas cakes this year for the first time in many years. I think that this year people are trying to capture the feeling of simpler Christmases of childhood. We all need presence not presents

I am feeling so envious! Nobody in our house likes it, except for me, so I've stopped making one. Perfect time to start too.
